Check a public notice’s reasons, evidence, and missing information

Public notices organize information for people who need to act on it. Headings can help, but a clear layout does not guarantee a well-supported proposal. California’s Grade 7 additions include reading text features in public documents. This fictional notice invites students to examine both organization and reasoning.

Mock public notice — Proposal: Replace the park’s broken benches. Reason: Repairing the current benches has cost $240 this year. Evidence offered: A supplier advertises new benches at $300 each. Comment meeting: Tuesday, 4 p.m., community room. Question for residents: Should the council buy replacements?

Try the activity

Explain how the four labels help a reader locate the proposal and the meeting. Then evaluate the implied claim that replacement is the better financial choice. List information needed before comparing costs fairly, and write a short response that does not treat the advertisement as a complete budget.

Follow the reasoning

The labels separate the action proposed, the reason, the evidence offered, and the opportunity to comment. The advertised price is relevant to purchase cost, but it is not sufficient for the comparison. The notice does not say how many benches need replacement, whether delivery and installation are included, or how long repairs and replacements are expected to last. The $240 repair figure and $300 unit price describe different quantities, so comparing them alone cannot establish total savings.

Notice what needs more practice

Students may reject the proposal just because its evidence is incomplete. A better conclusion is that the notice has not yet established the financial advantage. Replacement might still be justified by safety or condition, but the passage gives no inspection evidence. Ask students to identify the exact gap rather than adding facts they would like to be true.

Choose an actual public notice appropriate for the class. Record its issuing organization, date, and purpose before analyzing its headings and support. If it invites public comment, the classroom exercise can remain a written analysis; students do not need to submit personal information or a real comment.

Is relevant evidence always enough to support a claim?

No. A price may be relevant but incomplete. To compare repair and replacement costs, a reader also needs comparable quantities and a clear account of what each cost includes.
