Alabama Grade 7 English: Evaluate an argument and answer an opposing view

Seventh-grade English in Alabama moves beyond recognizing reasons toward judging how well they serve an author’s purpose. Argument writing should acknowledge an alternative position and use credible evidence. Research writing also requires careful attribution, even when the wording is your own.

The middle-school course of study is organized into critical, digital, language, research, and vocabulary literacies, with recurring standards used throughout the year. The Grade 7 section of the 2021 Alabama Course of Study is the starting point for the references here. Alabama’s standards directory lists the course as effective from the 2022–2023 school year.

A worked Grade 7 learning example

The following short example was written for this guide. Use it to model an explanation, then try the same skill with a teacher-selected text.

A fictional student proposal asks the school library to stay open after lessons on Fridays. Its main reason is that some students have no quiet place to read. An opposing view says staff would need additional paid time. The proposal gives no attendance estimate and no staffing cost.

How to reason through it

The need for a quiet space gives the proposal a purpose, but the staffing concern remains unanswered. A stronger argument would investigate likely attendance and staffing before claiming the plan is affordable. Acknowledging the concern is part of reasoning, not a weakness to hide.

What to notice in the response

If a student dismisses the opposing view as ‘wrong,’ ask which evidence would help decide the issue. If source wording appears in a draft without quotation marks or attribution, compare it with the original and practice an accurately attributed paraphrase.

A manageable Grade 7 study routine

  1. Identify a claim, its supporting reasons, and an alternative position.
  2. Evaluate whether the evidence answers the strongest concern.
  3. Revise the argument and keep a record of borrowed ideas and quotations.

A useful revision may narrow a claim or admit that evidence is missing. Do not reward certainty when the available information cannot support it.
