Show how a phrase and a clause supply timing information
Two groups of words can perform a similar job in a sentence while having different internal structures. This comparison uses timing expressions to connect grammatical labels with meaning. Students should explain what the words do, not identify a clause just because it is longer.

This original classroom example is separate from official assessment questions.
Sentence A: Before lunch, Devin packed the model carefully.
Sentence B: Before the bell rang, Devin packed the model carefully.
| Word group | Internal structure | Function here |
|---|---|---|
| Before lunch | Preposition with object; no subject-verb pair | Timing for packed |
| Before the bell rang | Dependent clause: bell / rang | Timing for packed |
| Devin packed the model carefully | Main clause: Devin / packed | States the main action |
Try the activity
Compare before lunch with before the bell rang. Explain why the first is a phrase and the second contains a dependent clause. Identify the subject and verb within the clause, then explain what both expressions tell the reader about the main action.
Follow the reasoning
Before lunch is a prepositional phrase: it includes before and its object lunch without a subject-verb pairing. Before the bell rang is a dependent clause, with bell as its subject and rang as its verb. The introductory before makes the clause dependent in this sentence. Both expressions provide timing information for Devin’s packing. The main clause Devin packed the model carefully supplies its own subject and verb and can form a complete sentence on its own.
Notice what needs more practice
A clause can contain a subject and verb while still depending on another clause for a complete statement in this use. “Before the bell rang” leaves the expected main action unstated when used as an isolated fragment. Word count does not determine the category: a long prepositional phrase can still lack a subject-verb pairing. The two sentences also do not establish that lunch begins at the bell. Their time references may differ, so grammatical similarity is not proof of identical events.

Use the next session to build independence
- Identify the word group’s role in the full sentence.
- Check whether the group contains a subject-verb pairing.
- Explain both its structure and the information it supplies.
Replace before lunch with after the rehearsal and analyze the new phrase. Then write a sentence using after the class rehearsed and identify the clause’s subject and verb. Compare what changes in the time relationship. Avoid memorizing that before always begins one category: the words that follow determine its use. Extend the analysis to other phrases and clauses in a classroom text, explaining their functions in particular sentences. This timing pair illustrates a selected grammar focus; it does not cover all clause types or every sentence-writing expectation.
