What do Alaska 7th graders learn in ELA?

In 7th grade, Alaska English language arts centers on how ideas and characters develop, comparing texts, and arguments with claims and counterclaims. Students take the AK STAR grade 7 ELA test in the spring. This page explains each Alaska grade 7 ELA standard and pairs it with short lessons, printable worksheets and a full-length practice test.

Test whether reasons and evidence support a claim

Seventh-grade argument reading should move beyond agreeing with the writer. Identify the claim, trace each reason, and ask whether the evidence is both relevant and sufficient. A plausible proposal may still need better evidence before a school or community can act on it.

A worked Grade 7 reading and writing example

These original classroom examples model reasoning. They are fictional learning material, separate from official assessment questions.

This proposal and its figures are invented: 'Our Alaska school should hold a weekend reading workshop. Four students said they would attend, so almost every family will come. A weekend gives families more time, and the event will cost nothing.' The proposal includes no family survey, staffing plan, or cost estimate.

Build the explanation

The claim is to hold a weekend workshop. Four students' interest is relevant to participation but insufficient to predict almost every family's attendance. The statements about available time and zero cost also need support. A stronger argument could propose a small pilot, collect family preferences, and estimate staffing and materials before making a larger commitment.

Diagnose the next learning need

Students sometimes reject an entire proposal because one reason is weak. Separate the value of the idea from the strength of its support. Another common error is treating an assertion as evidence simply because it sounds confident.

Make the next practice session count

  1. Underline the claim and number the reasons.
  2. Match each reason to evidence and note missing support.
  3. Rewrite the argument with a narrower claim and an acknowledged limitation.

Evaluate a real opinion piece chosen by the teacher. Explain which evidence would change your assessment, rather than merely stating your personal preference.
