How to turn PSAT 8/9 practice into a study plan
Try a mixed practice set, then choose your next lesson from the mistakes you can explain. The official Math section has 44 questions across two 35-minute modules. Our independent activities help you review skills; their results are study feedback, not a College Board score.
- Sort each miss. Was the obstacle understanding the question, choosing an equation, carrying out a calculation, or running out of time? Write down the skill and the reason.
- Review one skill. Use the topic directory below to open its lesson and printable worksheet. Explain one worked example in your own words before trying new questions.
- Return to mixed practice. Once you can solve that kind of problem without the example, mix it with earlier topics. Check whether you can recognize the method as well as carry it out.
Give linear equations, linear functions and systems regular practice: Algebra has the largest share of PSAT 8/9 Math questions. Keep geometry review focused on area, volume, lines, angles and triangles; trigonometry is outside the PSAT 8/9 specifications. Check College Board’s PSAT 8/9 Math specifications.
Choose a skill to fix next
Use the type of mistake, rather than a score alone, to choose a short lesson. These are focused starting points, not a complete test blueprint.
Linear equations
Write the equation first, then reverse addition or subtraction before multiplication or division. Check the answer in the original equation.
Slope and graphs
Compare the change in y with the change in x. Use the same point order in both differences, and check whether the slope should be positive or negative.
Systems of equations
Choose substitution when one variable is easy to isolate; use elimination when coefficients line up. Substitute the solution into both equations.
Percent problems
Identify the whole before calculating a percent. For percent change, divide the difference by the original amount.
Triangles
Label the given angles and lengths. Decide whether you need the angle sum, a triangle area formula, or the Pythagorean theorem.
Fraction arithmetic
Use a common denominator for addition or subtraction. Keep the operation separate from simplifying the final fraction.
