Significant Figures Calculator — Count & Round Sig Figs (Free)
Use this free significant figures calculator to count the sig figs in a number and round it to however many you need. Enter a value and you’ll get the count, the rounded result, and a clear explanation of which digits are significant and why.
How to use the calculator
- Enter your number.
- Optionally choose how many significant figures to round to.
- Read the sig-fig count, the rounded value, and the steps.
The significant-figure rules
All nonzero digits are significant. Zeros between nonzero digits are significant. Leading zeros are not. Trailing zeros are significant only when a decimal point is present. The calculator applies these rules and flags ambiguous cases like 1200.
Frequently asked questions
How many significant figures does 0.004560 have?
Four — the 4, 5, 6 and the trailing zero (which counts because there’s a decimal point). Leading zeros don’t count.
Are trailing zeros significant?
Only when a decimal point is present. 100.00 has five sig figs, but 1200 written without a decimal point is ambiguous.
Can it round to a set number of sig figs?
Yes — enter the number of significant figures and it rounds the value accordingly.
