Descriptive Statistics Calculator — Mean, SD, Quartiles (Free)
Use this free descriptive statistics calculator to summarize a data set. Paste your numbers and you’ll get the mean, median, mode, range, the population and sample variance and standard deviation, the quartiles and IQR, and a box plot — all at once.
How to use the calculator
- Enter your numbers, separated by commas, spaces or new lines.
- Press Calculate.
- Read the full set of summary statistics and the box plot.
Measures of center and spread
The mean, median and mode describe the center; the range, standard deviation and interquartile range describe the spread. The calculator reports both population and sample versions of the variance and standard deviation.
Frequently asked questions
What’s the difference between sample and population standard deviation?
The population version divides by n; the sample version divides by n − 1, giving a slightly larger value. The calculator shows both.
How are the quartiles found?
By splitting the sorted data at the median and taking the medians of the lower and upper halves (the Tukey method). Q3 − Q1 is the IQR.
Can a data set have more than one mode?
Yes — if several values tie for most frequent, the data are multimodal, and the calculator lists each mode.
