Alabama Grade 6 English: Trace a claim before trusting it

Alabama organizes middle-school English into critical, digital, language, research, and vocabulary literacies. Sixth graders need to connect what a text says with how it is built and why a source can be trusted. A polished page or a confident headline is not enough evidence.

A worked Grade 6 learning example

The following short example was written for this guide. Use it to model an explanation, then try the same skill with a teacher-selected text.

Two fictional webpages discuss a school reading club. Page A says the club improved reading for every member, but identifies no author, dates, or measures. Page B explains who participated, how attendance was recorded, and which reading measure was used; it also says the small group cannot represent every student.

How to reason through it

Page B gives a reader more information to evaluate the claim. That does not make every conclusion on it correct. The next step is to inspect the measure and compare it with the stated conclusion. Page A’s confident wording leaves important questions unanswered, including how ‘improved’ was defined.

What to notice in the response

If the student judges credibility only by the page’s appearance, redirect attention to authorship, evidence, purpose, and limitations. If the evidence is identified but not connected to the conclusion, ask what the measure actually allows the writer to claim.

A manageable Grade 6 study routine

1. Identify a text’s claim and the structure used to develop it.
2. Check the source’s author, purpose, supporting evidence, and unanswered questions.
3. Write a short explanation that distinguishes what is known from what needs checking.

Apply the same questions to a teacher-selected online article. Record the source rather than treating a search-result snippet as the complete evidence.
