Combine a written description with a visual display

A graph, map, or diagram can add information that a paragraph does not include. Sixth-grade readers should explain that contribution rather than describing the visual as decoration. Start with a clearly labeled classroom data display and a short statement, then test whether the statement represents the display accurately.

A worked Grade 6 reading and writing example

These original classroom examples model reasoning. They are fictional learning material, separate from official assessment questions.

The following scenario and figures are invented, not Alaska school statistics. A school newsletter says, 'Students showed interest in several reading-event activities.' Its chart lists 18 requests for an author visit, 12 for a book swap, and 10 for a reading circle. The chart title is 'Requests from one class'; it does not show preferences from the whole school.

Build the explanation

The sentence conveys a general idea, while the chart identifies the activities and compares requests. The author's purpose appears to be informing readers about interest in an event. The author visit has the largest count in this class, but the display does not justify saying it is the school's favorite activity. A careful response keeps the class-sized scope in view.

Diagnose the next learning need

If the student explains only the numbers, ask how they add to the sentence. If the student makes a schoolwide claim, revisit the chart title. Units, labels, and the group represented are part of the evidence.

Make the next practice session count

1. Read the title, labels, and unit before interpreting a visual.
2. State what the paragraph says and what the visual adds.
3. Revise any conclusion that extends beyond the represented group.
