Alabama Grade 5 English: Connect events and integrate information from sources

Fifth-grade English in Alabama develops evidence-based reading and writing across subjects. A student needs to explain relationships in a text, use quotations accurately, and bring information from more than one source into an organized explanation. Give each source a clear job rather than copy facts into a list.

The elementary course of study connects Literacy Foundations with reading, listening, writing, and speaking. The Grade 5 section of the 2021 Alabama Course of Study is the starting point for the references here. Alabama’s standards directory lists the course as effective from the 2022–2023 school year.

A worked Grade 5 learning example

The following short example was written for this guide. Use it to model an explanation, then try the same skill with a teacher-selected text.

In this imagined classroom project, Source A describes students collecting rainwater for a garden. Source B is their weekly record: collected water was used twice during a dry week. Neither source measures total water savings across the entire season.

How to reason through it

Together, the sources show how the class used collected water during one dry week. They do not prove that the system supplied all the garden’s needs or saved a particular amount over the season. An explanation can connect the description to the record while stating what the evidence cannot establish.

What to notice in the response

If the student writes ‘The system always saves lots of water,’ ask which source supports ‘always’ and ‘lots.’ If paragraphs repeat the sources separately, have the student explain how a detail from one helps interpret the other.

A manageable Grade 5 study routine

1. Read two short sources on one topic and label the type of information each provides.
2. Record a relevant detail from each source with its title or author.
3. Write an explanation that connects the details and separates evidence from an unsupported conclusion.

Use real teacher-selected sources for the next attempt. Check quotations against the original, and ask the student to explain why the evidence belongs in the paragraph.
