Compare how two texts organize the same practical topic

Texts about the same subject can organize their information differently. This activity asks students to explain what each structure helps a reader understand, then organize their own response around that comparison.

A worked Grade 5 reading and writing activity

This original classroom example is separate from official assessment questions.

Text A: First, the class counted the brushes in each art kit. Next, students placed matching sets in small trays. They attached a label listing the kit’s contents. Finally, they put the labeled trays on the shelf. Text B: Open trays let students see materials quickly, while lidded kits keep loose items enclosed when carried. Both can hold a labeled set of supplies. A class choosing storage should consider whether the kits stay on a shelf or move between rooms.

Try the activity

Explain the structure of each text and cite details that show the difference. Write a short paragraph comparing how the texts help a reader. Include a clear topic sentence and group the information about each structure logically.

Follow the reasoning

Text A uses a sequence of steps, signaled by first, next, and finally. It helps a reader follow how the class organized its kits. Text B compares two storage choices by describing what each makes easier, then identifies a shared feature. It helps a reader consider which kind of storage fits a situation. A comparison paragraph might begin: “Both texts describe art-kit storage, but they organize information for different reading purposes.” The paragraph can then explain the sequence with one step from A and the comparison with one difference from B.

Notice what needs more practice

A response saying both texts are lists notices surface features but misses their relationships. Ask whether changing the order of Text A’s steps would change the process. Then ask whether Text B requires one storage choice to occur before the other. A response claiming lidded kits are always better goes beyond the text: B asks readers to consider the use. A response copying both passages in full needs a clearer focus on how organization helps the reader.

Use the next session to build independence

1. Name the common topic before discussing differences.
2. Mark sequence signals in Text A and comparison signals in Text B.
3. Draft one sentence explaining the purpose served by each structure.
4. Write and revise a paragraph with a focused introduction, linked details, and a closing explanation.

Ask the student to reorganize Text A as a brief explanation of a problem and solution: the class needs clearly identified kits, so students count, group, and label materials. The new paragraph should preserve the information while changing its arrangement. Then discuss which version is more useful for someone carrying out the steps and which helps someone understand the purpose. For later practice, compare two longer texts on a familiar topic, checking whether the student can explain the structure with evidence instead of relying only on signal words.
