CBEST Math Section Facts and Skill Areas

Item Details
Questions 50 multiple-choice, most of them word problems
Time 2 hours for the Mathematics section
Calculator Not allowed
Passing score Scaled score of 41, or 37 with a total of 123 across Reading, Mathematics and Writing
Test format Computer-based at a test center, or online proctored

The questions fall into three skill areas. Here is where to practice each one on this page:

  • Estimation, Measurement, and Statistical Principles: Geometry and Measurement; Data, Statistics, and Probability.
  • Computation and Problem Solving: Number Sense and Rational Numbers; Ratios, Percents, and Rates.
  • Numerical and Graphic Relationships: Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities; Coordinate Geometry and Lines.

Four CBEST-Style Word Problems Without a Calculator

  1. Estimate first: A teacher buys 28 books at $7.95 each. Round to 28 × $8 = $224. The exact cost, $222.60, is just under that.
  2. Percent from a fraction: 18 of 24 students passed a quiz. 18 ÷ 24 = 3/4, which is 75%.
  3. Average: Test scores are 82, 90, 75 and 93. The sum is 340, and 340 ÷ 4 = 85.
  4. Units: A field trip lasts 2.5 hours. That is 2.5 × 60 = 150 minutes.

Notice that each one turns into easy numbers once you round, simplify a fraction, or convert units. That habit saves time across the whole section.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the CBEST math hard?

The math itself stays at a basic level: arithmetic, percents, simple algebra, measurement and reading graphs. What makes it feel hard is that you cannot use a calculator and most questions are word problems. If you practice turning words into a setup and doing fractions and decimals by hand, the section becomes much more manageable.

How can I prepare for the CBEST math section?

Take one practice test to find your weak skills. Then work one worksheet per skill, by hand, and check every miss until you can explain the right answer. Once your weak spots improve, take another timed practice set. Two hours for 50 questions is generous, so accuracy matters more than speed.

Can you use a calculator on the CBEST math?

No. Calculators are prohibited on the CBEST, so every computation is done by hand or in your head. Practice estimation, long multiplication, dividing decimals and converting fractions to percents without one. Rounding first is often the fastest way to rule out wrong answer choices.

What score do you need to pass CBEST math?

Each CBEST section is scored on a scale where 41 is passing. You can still pass with a math score as low as 37 if your total for Reading, Mathematics and Writing is at least 123. No section can be below 37.

Is there an official CBEST math practice test PDF?

Yes. The official CBEST testing site posts a paper version of its computer-based math practice test with an answer key. It shows the three skill areas, which makes it a good way to find which worksheet groups on this page to work on next.
