What Level of Maths Is Tested on the PSAT/NMSQT®?
As an 11th grader, one of the challenges you will face during your education life will be the PSAT/NMSQT®. Currently, you may be planning to take it. Likewise, you may be preparing for it.

What Do You Need to Know About PSAT/NMSQT®?
The complete test duration is 2 hours and 45 minutes. Various subjects’ knowledge is tested during the PSAT/NMSQT®. The math section is challenging for most students and makes up 70 minutes of the test.
In total, you will have to solve 48 questions. Out of these, most will be of multiple-choice formatting. However, there will be some problem-solving questions as well.
Besides that, you will be allowed to use the calculator for the math section. However, only some types are approved for the PSAT/NMSQT®. So be sure to know them beforehand.
What Level of Math Is Tested on The PSAT/NMSQT®?
The test is primarily made up of the difficulty suitable for an 11th grader. You will be tested particularly on four areas of math. These are:
1- Algebra
The algebraic questions make up approximately 33% of the math portion. They will test your capability to understand, solve, and form linear equations. Other topics that you will be tested on are inequalities and functions.
Besides that, quadratic equations will also come in this section. To show a high understanding, you will have to solve a variety of problems. Some of them will be simple to test your basics.
However, there will be complex questions as well. For example, you may have to solve a problem by interpreting graphs.
2- Problem-Solving and Data Analysis
This area makes up 29% of the math section. You will be expected to understand and use quantitative reasoning for various topics. These include ratios, proportional relationships, rates, and much more.
You must also take the units into account and show the meaning of various quantities. Many questions will come with information in the form of a table, graph, or scatterplot. Additionally, an understanding of statistical concepts will also be tested in this section.
Lastly, the meaning and concept of standard deviation will also be tested. However, you will never be asked to calculate this.
3- Passport to Advanced Math
The advanced math questions make up about 28% of the math portion. This area includes various topics that require high understanding. The most vital thing you will be tested on is expressions and your ability to analyze them.
Polynomials are also an integral part of this section. Thus you must know how to solve area, perimeter, and volume questions for different shapes. This portion will test the knowledge of coordinate geometry, transformations, Pythagorean theorem, and much more.
4- Additional Topics
This makes up only 10% of the math section. Geometric and trigonometric concepts are integral topics of this section. Additionally, probability and statistics questions are likely to come as well.
