Independent identification also requires care. Many self-described independents consistently lean toward one major party and vote much like admitted partisans. A rise in the independent label can therefore overstate the amount of political independence. Researchers compare labels, leaning questions, repeated vote choice, and strength of attachment. If the label weakens while behavior remains stable, some dealignment may have occurred, but the party system has not necessarily lost its two-coalition structure.

Dealignment differs from realignment. Realignment moves groups into a different durable coalition or reorganizes party dominance. Dealignment loosens the connection without specifying a new home. It also differs from polarization, which concerns distance between party positions, and sorting, which aligns ideology more closely with party. A citizen can reject both labels while leaning predictably, and parties can polarize even as independent identification rises.

Candidate-centered campaigns can encourage dealignment by giving voters personal brands and direct fundraising networks that compete with party organizations. Distrust of institutions, generational change, and cross-pressures among social identities can also weaken attachment. Still, weaker labels do not mean parties have stopped organizing elections or governing. The correct conclusion follows the measure actually presented.
