Take a full form, then read the explanation under every question you missed. Sort the misses by subarea. Because history and social science is sixty percent of this subtest, a weak block there costs roughly twice what the same number of language arts misses would.

MTEL General Curriculum Subtest 1 at a glance
Massachusetts changed this test in August 2023, and the change matters if you are studying from an older guide. The General Curriculum test used to be a Multi-Subject subtest and a Mathematics subtest. It is now Subtest 1, which is language arts and history and social science, and Subtest 2, which is mathematics, science, and technology and engineering. There is no standalone mathematics subtest any more, and there are no mathematics questions on this one.
| Subtest code | 178 (General Curriculum, Subtest 1: Language Arts and History/Social Science) |
|---|---|
| Replaces | The retired General Curriculum test 103/203, whose last administration was August 20, 2023. Under the old structure, 103 was Multi-Subject and 203 was Mathematics. |
| The other subtest | Subtest 2 is code 278, covering Mathematics, Science, and Technology/Engineering. The two are taken and passed separately and both are required. |
| Number of questions | 60 multiple-choice questions and 1 open-response assignment |
| Time limit | 4 hours 15 minutes total appointment, covering one or both subtests: 15 minutes of tutorial and agreement, then 4 hours of testing. |
| Calculator | None on this subtest. The on-screen four-function calculator is provided on Subtest 2 only. |
| Format | Computer-based |
| Passing score | 240 on a scale of 100 to 300, for this subtest on its own. |
Massachusetts publishes the weights and they are not evenly split. Language Arts, objectives 0001 to 0004, is 30 percent. History and Social Science, objectives 0005 to 0009, is 60 percent. Integration of Knowledge and Understanding, objective 0010, is 10 percent and is the open-response assignment. History carries twice the weight of language arts, which is the opposite of what most candidates assume from the test’s name.
The three subareas, in plain language
Massachusetts states each objective and lists what it expects. Here is what each subarea asks of you, with its published weight.
Language arts (30 percent, objectives 0001 to 0004)
Reading, literature, writing, and the conventions of English.
- Reading development and the foundational skills
- Literature, genre, and literary elements
- Comprehension of literary and informational text
- Writing development and the writing process
- Grammar, usage, and mechanics
History and social science (60 percent, objectives 0005 to 0009)
The largest subarea by a wide margin.
- United States history from colonization to the present
- Massachusetts and New England history
- World history and its major eras
- Geography, maps, and human and physical systems
- Government, civics, and citizenship
- Economics and economic reasoning
Integration of knowledge and understanding (10 percent, objective 0010)
One open-response assignment connecting the subareas.
- Draw on knowledge from more than one subarea
- Answer the question that was actually asked
- Support the answer with specific, accurate content
- Write it directly, without padding
A study routine built around a 60 / 30 split
The name of this test says General Curriculum, which makes candidates study everything evenly. The weighting says something else: history and social science is worth twice language arts.

Before test day
Check the number on your study guide before anything else. If it says 103 or 203, it is preparing you for a test Massachusetts retired in August 2023, and it will have you studying mathematics that is no longer on this subtest at all. Once you are on the right test, the weighting does the rest of the planning: sixty percent history, thirty percent language arts, and one open response that asks you to connect the two.
