Five OAR Math Problems Worked Out by Hand
OAR math questions are short, but most of them hide a setup step. Here is how five typical problem types work when you solve them on scratch paper.
- Rate: A ship covers 84 nautical miles in 3.5 hours. What is its speed? Speed = distance ÷ time = 84 ÷ 3.5 = 24 knots.
- Percent off: A jacket costs $80 and is marked down 15%. You pay 85% of the price, so 0.85 × 80 = $68.
- Linear equation: Solve 3x − 7 = 2x + 5. Subtract 2x from both sides to get x − 7 = 5, so x = 12.
- Right triangle: The legs are 9 and 12. The hypotenuse is √(81 + 144) = √225 = 15. Spotting the 3-4-5 pattern (times 3) gets you there faster.
- Ratio: Two fuels are mixed in a 2:3 ratio to make 40 gallons. There are 5 parts, so each part is 8 gallons: 16 gallons of the first and 24 of the second.
If one of these felt slow, match it to a worksheet group on this page:
| Problem type | Worksheet group to practice |
|---|---|
| Rates and percents | Ratios, Percents, and Rates |
| Equations | Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities |
| Triangles and area | Geometry and Measurement |
| Fractions and decimals | Number Sense and Rational Numbers |
| Averages and chance | Data, Statistics, and Probability |
Frequently Asked Questions
What is on the OAR math test?
OAR math is the Math Skills Test, one of three sections of the Navy’s Officer Aptitude Rating, along with Reading Comprehension and Mechanical Comprehension. It covers arithmetic, algebra, basic geometry and word problems on rates, ratios and percents. The math itself rarely goes beyond high school algebra and geometry, but the word problems take careful reading.
Is there a free OAR practice test?
Yes. A free OAR math practice test is linked alongside these worksheets, and it gives you mixed, test-style questions to find your weak areas. After you finish, sort your misses by topic, such as percents or equations, and print the worksheet for each one. Recruiters can also tell you about official preparation materials for your program.
What kind of math questions are on the OAR?
Expect short word problems built on everyday math. A ship travels 240 miles at 60 miles per hour; how long does it take? (4 hours). What is 15% of 240? (36). If a crew of 3 sailors can paint 2 rooms in a day, how many rooms can 9 sailors paint? (6). Most can be solved without a calculator using quick arithmetic.
Is there an OAR practice test PDF?
Each OAR math worksheet here prints as a PDF focused on one skill, with an answer key, so you can practice on paper the way you would study from a workbook. Work through a few topic sets, then switch to the mixed practice test to check your pacing. Keep a running list of mistakes to review the night before.
How should I study for OAR math?
Start with the skills that appear inside many problems: fractions, decimals, percents, ratios and rates, and one-step and two-step equations. Then add geometry topics such as area, perimeter and angles. Practice without a calculator, solve one worksheet per session, and take a timed practice test every week or so to see how much faster you are getting.
