How to Prepare for the TSI Math Test?

The Texas Success Initiative Assessment, known as the TSI, is a test to determine the appropriate level of college coursework for an incoming student. Since January 11, 2021, the current version has been the TSI Assessment 2.0 (TSIA2). In essence, it is a broad and quick assessment of students’ academic abilities.

The TSIA2 consists of two sections:

• Mathematics
• English Language Arts and Reading (ELAR), which covers reading and writing and includes an essay

The mathematics section starts with a 20-question College Readiness Classification (CRC) test. If you score below 950, you continue to a 48-question Diagnostic test.

The questions cover four strands: Quantitative Reasoning, Algebraic Reasoning, Geometric and Spatial Reasoning, and Probabilistic and Statistical Reasoning.

Students are not allowed to use a calculator when taking a TSI assessment. A pop-up calculator is embedded in the test for some questions.

How to Study for the TSI Math Test?

The TSI test is a comprehensive assessment, and of its two sections, ELAR and mathematics, many students find math the most challenging.

6. Review TSI Math Formulas wisely

The TSI Mathematics test provides some formulas for some questions on the test, which displays formulas relating to geometric measurement and certain algebra concepts.

Mathematics Formulas are provided to test-takers so that they may focus on the application, rather than the memorization, of formulas. 

However, the test does not provide a list of all the basic formulas that will be required to know for the test. This means that you will need to be able to recall many math formulas on the TSI.

7. Take Practice Tests

When you feel that you are ready to measure your math skills and exam readiness, it is time to experience a simulated TSI Math test.

You can take an online or written practice test (they are included in many test prep books).

8. Register for TSI Math Test

Participating in a Pre-Assessment Activity is mandatory before you take the TSI Assessment. It is a requirement that you complete this activity before you take the test.

Contact the college at which you want to take the test for details on dates and times to complete this mandatory Pre-Assessment Activity.

9. Take the TSI Math test

Arrive at your testing facility at least 30 minutes before the start of the test for checking.

Bring a valid form of identification (current driver’s license, military ID, passport, or state-issued ID card). Examiners who do not present a valid, unexpired photo ID are not allowed to test.

Cell phones, watches, and other electronic communication or photographic devices are prohibited in testing rooms.

It is also forbidden to eat or drink or smoke during the test.

The TSIA2 Math test covers the following strands:

• Quantitative Reasoning
• Algebraic Reasoning
• Geometric and Spatial Reasoning
• Probabilistic and Statistical Reasoning (data analysis, statistics, and Probability)

10. Check your score reports

If you do not meet the standard on one or both sections (ELAR and math) of the TSIA2, you may be placed in a co-requisite course (a college-level course paired with a support course) or in developmental education coursework in that subject.

You may retake the TSI test if you are not satisfied with your results. Texas does not set a statewide retest limit; each college sets its own retest rules and fees.

Keep in mind that developmental education courses often cost the same as a college-level course but do not count toward a certificate or degree program. Therefore, it’s best to avoid the developmental course by becoming college-ready before enrolling in a college or university.

11. Interpret your score

Students who receive a score at or above the cut scores are considered “college-ready”. They are eligible to enroll in any entry-level college course.

Keep in mind that some college courses require passing scores in more than one area.

The TSIA2 college readiness standards set by the state are:

• Mathematics: a College Readiness Classification (CRC) score of at least 950 (on a 910 to 990 scale), or a CRC score below 950 and a Diagnostic Level of 6
• ELAR (reading and writing): a CRC score of at least 945 and an essay score of at least 5, or a CRC score below 945, a Diagnostic Level of 5 or 6, and an essay score of at least 5

The older cut scores you may still see online (such as 350 in math) belong to the original TSI Assessment, used before January 11, 2021. Those results have now expired.

What happens if I score below college-ready standards?

If you did not pass one or more sections of the TSI test, you may be placed in either a developmental course or an intervention to help you improve your skills and to prepare you for success in college-level courses.

Can I retake the TSI test?

Yes. Texas does not set a statewide limit on retests. Each college testing center sets its own retest rules, fees, and any waiting time, so check with yours before you schedule. Use the time in between to study the areas your score report flagged.

What math is in the TSI Math Test section?

The TSIA2 math test starts with 20 multiple-choice College Readiness Classification (CRC) questions, followed by a 48-question Diagnostic test if you score below 950. The questions come from four strands:

Can I bring a calculator to the TSI test?

No! You cannot bring a calculator with you. An on-screen calculator will be provided for you to use on some questions. Also, remember that any other means of communication such as mobile phones are also prohibited at the test center.

How long does the math TSI take?

The TSIA2 is untimed, so there is no set length. Colleges typically schedule several hours for the full test, which covers both ELAR and math.

Can you take the TSI at home?

Yes. Online TSI testing is now available for most students. Contact the college at which you want to take the test for details.
Your computer must be equipped with a webcam and microphone as the online proctor will monitor you during the test.

How long are your TSI Assessment scores valid?

TSIA and TSIA2 scores are valid for five years from the date you test. Exemption scores from the SAT, ACT, STAAR, and similar tests also generally last five years from the test date.

Can I go to college with a TSI?

Yes. Unless exempt, students entering a Texas public college or university must complete the Pre-Assessment Activity (PAA) and then take the state-approved TSI Assessment test and receive passing scores to enroll in credit-bearing courses.

Is the TSI Math test all multiple choice?

Yes. The TSIA2 math questions are multiple-choice. The ELAR section is also multiple-choice, except for its essay.

How many questions can you miss on the math TSI test?
