How to prepare for TSI Math Test

The Texas Success Initiative Assessment, is known as the TSI, is a test to determine the appropriate level of college course work for an incoming student. In essence, it is a broad and quick assessment of students’ academic abilities.

The TSI test consists of three separate exams:

  • Mathematics
  • Reading
  • Writing

The mathematics portion of the TSI test contains 20 questions. The test covers data analysis, geometry, and algebra on both intermediate and basic levels. Students are not allowed to use a calculator when taking a TSI assessment. A pop-up calculator is embedded in the test for some questions.

2.  Think of Math positively

8.  Register for TSI Math Test

Participating in a Pre-Assessment Activity is mandatory before you take the TSI Assessment. It is a requirement that you complete this activity before you take the test. 9.  Take the TSI Math test

Arrive at your testing facility at least 30 minutes before the start of the test for checking. Bring a valid form of identification (current driver’s license, military ID, passport, state-issued ID card). Examiners who do not present a valid, unexpired photo ID are not allowed to test. Cell phones, watches, and other electronic communication or photographic devices are prohibited in testing rooms. It is also forbidden to eat or drink or smoke during the test.

10. Check your score reports

If you do not pass one or all parts (reading, writing and math) of the TSI Assessment, you may be required to enroll in developmental education coursework the subject in which you did not pass. You may retake the TSI test if you are not satisfied with your results at any time to determine your college readiness. Keep in mind that the developmental education courses often cost the same as a college-level course but do not count towards a certificate or degree program. Therefore, it’s best to avoid the developmental course by becoming college ready before enrolling in at a college or university.

11. Interpret your score

Students who receive a score at or above the cut scores are considered “college ready”. They are eligible to enroll in any entry level college course. Keep in mind that some college courses require passing scores in more than one area.

The passing cut scores for TSI as set by the state are:

  • Mathematics: a minimum score of 350
  • Reading: a minimum score of 351
  • Writing: a score of 5 on the essay section or a score of 4 on the essay and a minimum score of 340 on the multiple choice section

What happens if I score below college ready standards?

If you did not pass one or more sections of the TSI test, you may be placed in either a developmental course or an intervention to help you improve your skills and to prepare you for success in college-level courses.

Can I retake the TSI test?

Yes, there is no limit to the number of times you can take the TSI test.  Obviously, you need to study more to get a better score on the test. You will also have to pay the cost of retaking the test.

What math is on TSI Math Test section?

The TSI math test consists of 20 multiple choice questions that include the following topics:

Can I bring a calculator to the TSI test?

No! you cannot bring a calculator with yourself. An onscreen calculator will be provided for you to use on some questions. Also, remember that any other means of communication such as mobile phones are also prohibited at the test center.

How long does the math TSI take?

It can take 3 to 5 hours to complete all three sections of reading, writing and math. However, the TSI test does not set a time limit for test takers.

Can you take the TSI at home?

Yes. Online TSI testing is now available for most students. Contact the college at which you want to take the test for details.
Your computer must be equipped with a webcam and microphone as online proctor will monitor you during the test.

How long are your TSI Assessment scores valid?

The TSI Assessment and all TSI alternative tests (TAKS, SAT, ACT and STAAR) are valid for 5 years from the day the exam was taken.

Can I go to college with a TSI?

Yes. Unless exempt, students entering a Texas public college or university must complete the Pre-Assessment Activity (PAA) and then take the state-approved TSI Assessment test and receive passing scores in order to enroll in credit bearing courses.
