In the United States, the General Educational Development (GED) test replaces the high school diploma, the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET), and the Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) tests.

When passed, the General Educational Development (GED) tests confirm that the test taker has high school-level academic skills. There are over 3,200 official GED Testing Centers in the United States and Canada.

Science

This exam consists of a single 90-minute section with no breaks. Reading for meaning in science, planning, and interpreting science experiments, and using statistics and images in science are among the topics covered. It is permissible to use a calculator and a calculator reference sheet.

Reasoning through Language Arts

The GED exam takes 150 minutes to complete. A ten-minute pause separates parts two and three.

The questions in the two portions of the test include multiple-choice, drag-and-drop, picking an area, and dropdown options.

A written essay will take up to the final 45 minutes. The only three topics covered on the GED Reasoning through Language Arts exam are reading for meaning, grammar, and language, as well as identifying and forming arguments.

Mathematical Reasoning

There are two parts to this GED exam with 115 minutes to finish it. A calculator reference sheet and a math formula sheet can be useful.

During the second section of the exam, you can also utilize a calculator. Basic arithmetic, geometry, basic algebra, graphs, and functions are the only four areas covered on the GED math exam.

Social Studies

Without a break, the social studies exam lasts 70 minutes. This test’s questions are based on numbers and graphs analyzing historical events and arguments in social studies with multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, drag-and-drop, and dropdown options included in this test. A calculator and a calculator reference sheet can be used.

Eligibility for GED Test

The GED requirements vary by state. According to GED Testing Service regulations, students must be at least 16 years old and not enrolled in high school to participate in the program.

In contrast, many states demand that the applicant be 17 years old and a resident of the state.

Cost of GED Test

You have the option of paying for each topic area test individually or paying for all four tests at once. The cost of obtaining a GED varies by state. The average cost of a subject test is $30-$40, but some states provide free testing.

Cut-off Score

To pass, test takers must achieve at least 145 points on each of the four subject tests, with an individual GED test score of 800 being the highest possible.

Materials to take to the Testing Room

Pens, pencils, and erasers are the only materials that students are permitted to bring into the testing room; in some districts, food and drink are permitted for children who are taking all five tests on the same day, to prevent them from feeling hungry or ill during the breaks.

Food, coats, and caps, among other goods, are susceptible to confiscation by test administrators.

Except for Hawaii, every state that provides GED testing offers the test online. To begin the exam, you must have a government-issued photo ID. Because the tests are proctored online, you’ll need a webcam and a stable internet connection.

Additionally, there must be a closeable door in the room where you are taking the test so that there are no distractions. Test practice is not required before in-person exams, you must take a GED Ready practice test and receive a “Green” within 60 days of testing online.
