CLEP American Government, Chapter 35
Region
As an influence on socialization, region exposes people to different institutions, economies, histories, migration patterns, and local political cultures. Regional effects can change as populations and party coalitions change.
Place can matter when local parties, employers, media, laws, and civic organizations repeatedly teach residents what government does and how participation works; migration creates the competing possibility that different people selected the place.
Following movers helps separate place effects from population composition.
Regional patterns may reflect place or composition. Local institutions and political histories can socialize residents, while migration can also concentrate people who already differ. Comparisons over time, evidence from movers, and analysis within regions help separate these explanations. Labels such as South, Midwest, urban, or rural should not substitute for the institutions and experiences doing the causal work. Regional boundaries are analytical choices rather than political causes. A statewide pattern may conceal sharp metropolitan, suburban, and rural differences, while two distant communities with similar economies may generate comparable political concerns. Specify the geographic unit before interpreting any regional average. If movers gradually resemble longtime residents after exposure to the same local institutions, that pattern strengthens a place-based explanation.
