Gendered roles and recruitment can affect issue priorities, ambition, and experience with institutions.

Compare cohorts, party identity, intersecting groups, and social roles before explaining an average gender gap. Evidence of unequal recruitment, network access, or institutional experience supports a mechanism more directly than the final difference alone.

An average gender gap can change because party coalitions, employment, family roles, issue agendas, or cohort experiences change. It may also differ across race, religion, age, and marital status. A sound explanation specifies the outcome and comparison, avoids treating gender as a uniform cause, and tests the proposed experience or socializing message directly. The same caution applies to political ambition and participation. Differences may reflect recruitment, workplace networks, care responsibilities, discrimination, or policy priorities. Showing a gap identifies a pattern; explaining it requires evidence about one or more of those mechanisms. For example, unequal invitations to run for local office would support a recruitment mechanism more directly than a gender difference in candidacy alone.
