Race and ethnicity
CLEP American Government, Chapter 35
Race and ethnicity
As socialization contexts, race and ethnicity can shape experience with institutions, group identity, historical memory, networks, and political discussion. Broad categories contain substantial internal diversity.
History, discrimination, community institutions, migration, and linked fate can shape political orientations.
Examine variation by generation, nationality, class, and region rather than treating a category as deterministic.
Race and ethnicity matter politically through histories and institutions, not biological destiny. Experiences with discrimination, immigration, representation, language, parties, and community organizations vary within every broad category. Report the population and period precisely, examine intersecting identities, and connect any average difference to evidence for a mechanism instead of converting a group pattern into an individual prediction. National origin and generation can be especially important within aggregated categories. Immigrants, their children, and long-established communities may encounter different institutions and party appeals, so a single average can hide the very process a socialization study seeks to explain. For example, higher participation after targeted recruitment supports a mobilization mechanism more directly than a raw turnout difference between broad categories.
