FTCE English Language Skills at a glance
This is the grammar and usage half of the General Knowledge Test. It does not ask you to define parts of speech for their own sake. It asks whether you can spot a sentence that is wrong and pick the version that is right. Here are the facts worth knowing before you plan your study time.

Florida does not publish how many questions come from each competency. Any percentage breakdown you see on a prep site is someone’s estimate, not an official figure, so this Online Center does not repeat one.
The three competencies, in plain language
The official competency list runs to 19 skill statements. Grouped, they come down to three questions the test keeps asking about a sentence.
Competency 1: Knowledge of language structure
Does the sentence hold together as a sentence?
- Place modifiers so they attach to the right word
- Keep items in a series in the same grammatical form
- Use varied sentence structures without losing control of them
- Order and connect ideas so a paragraph reads in sequence
Competency 2: Knowledge of vocabulary application
Is this the right word, in this sentence, for this reader?
- Work out a word’s meaning from the sentence around it
- Choose between words whose meanings overlap but whose connotations differ
- Match word choice to the tone and formality the passage has already set
Competency 3: Knowledge of standard English conventions
Is it punctuated, spelled, and agreed correctly?
- Subject and verb agreement, including when a phrase separates them
- Pronoun agreement, reference, case, and unnecessary shifts
- Verb forms, tense, and consistent tense across a passage
- Adjective and adverb use, including comparative and superlative forms
- Commas, apostrophes, and end punctuation
- Capitalization and spelling, including commonly confused pairs
A study routine that fits 40 minutes of testing
The subtest is short and the clock is tight, so the useful skill is recognizing an error fast rather than reasoning your way to it. Four passes build that.

Before test day
Two things decide this subtest. The first is whether you can hear a comma splice, a dangling modifier, and a pronoun with no clear antecedent without stopping to diagram anything. The second is pacing: about 80 seconds a question, which is enough to read carefully once but not enough to argue with yourself twice.
If you are also preparing for the other three GK subtests, work them separately. They are scored separately, retaken separately, and the study each one needs looks nothing like the others.
