FTCE Reading at a glance
The Reading subtest is one of four parts of the General Knowledge Test. It does not check what you know about history or science. It checks whether you can read an unfamiliar passage carefully and answer using only what that passage actually says.

Florida does not publish how many questions come from each competency. Any percentage breakdown you see on a prep site is someone’s estimate, not an official figure, so this Online Center does not repeat one.

Competency 1: Key ideas and details
What does the text actually say, and what follows from it?
- Find textual evidence that supports a conclusion
- Identify explicit meaning and detail
- Separate a defensible inference from an unsupported leap
- Trace how a central idea develops across a text
- Summarize without distorting the passage
- Analyze how people, events, and ideas relate
Competency 2: Text structure and meaning
How is it built, and why those words?
- Work out word and phrase meaning in context, including figurative language
- Explain how a specific word choice shapes meaning or tone
- Analyze how structure and text features carry meaning
- Analyze how purpose and perspective shape the content
Competency 3: Integration of information and ideas
Weighing claims and combining sources.
- Evaluate content presented in different formats
- Judge a claim for relevance, sufficiency, and sound reasoning
- Synthesize several texts into one coherent explanation
- Compare how different authors approach the same topic

About 110 seconds a question, which is enough to read carefully once but not enough to argue with yourself twice. Four passes build the speed.

Before test day
Scope is what catches most candidates. A choice can be true about the world, and true about the topic, and still go further than the passage does. When two options look right, pick the one that stays inside the text.
The other three GK subtests are scored and retaken separately, so study them separately.
