Top 10 Tips to Create a PSAT/NMSQT Math Study Plan

The Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test or is as known as PSAT/NMSQT is a standardized test used for college admissions in the United States. 10th and 11th graders take the PSAT to practice for the SAT and receive a National Merit distinction or scholarship. PSAT is similar in format and content to SAT. The PSAT consists of three parts:

  • Reading
  • Math
  • Writing

The PSAT math section includes two sub-sections: a 25-minute no-calculator section, and a 45-minute calculator-optional section. These sections include a total of 48 questions: 40 multiple choice questions, and 8 student response questions (or “grid-in”).

To succeed in PSAT mathematics, you must have a PSAT study program. This plan tells you when, what, and how to prepare for PSAT math. It also helps you manage your time and make the most of your time. In this post, important points about creating a PSAT math study program are given. So join us!

1- Understand the structure of the PSAT

The PSAT consists of three sections: Math, Reading Comprehension, and Writing and Language. You will have 165 minutes to complete the test, broken down into 70 minutes for math, 60 minutes for reading, and 35 minutes for writing and language. The PSAT scores range from 320-1520, with students in the 90th percentile scoring over 1210.

2- Collect PSAT study materials

Before you start preparing for PSAT math, it is important to gather all the material for your study. That way, you do not waste time studying to find the resources you are using.

3- Get to class or tutoring

If you find it difficult to study PSAT math, you may want to take an exam preparation class. Some schools offer distance or face-to-face programs or study groups, and you may also be able to find a private tutoring course in your area. When you do not understand the answer, having a coach with you to explain it can be a great help.

4- Take PSAT practice tests

If you want to do well on the PSAT math, one of the best ways to prepare for that is to take at least one PSAT test. You can download these free and complete tests by visiting the College Board website directly.

Of all the possible PSAT study materials, practice tests are without a doubt the best sources available. With practice tests, you will collect the valid PSAT questions in a complete test-taking experience.

At the beginning of your studies, take a test to get your basic score (i.e. the score you start with) and identify your strengths and weaknesses. After completing the PSAT preparation, take another practice test to see how far you have come.

5- Analyze your mistakes

As you study, try to understand why the incorrect answer choices you’ve chosen are wrong. It means you’ll need to go through all practice tests and questions you’ve used for PSAT math preparation, mark the ones you answered incorrectly, and spend time figuring out where your logic or calculations went wrong.

Being able to identify your mistakes exactly and figure out what you can do to fix them will allow you to avoid making the same mistakes on the PSAT math.

6- Design a table to manage time

You can use a better time by designing a table. After doing this, you can assign each table column to a PSAT math topic. Fill in the columns according to what you want to read. Write down what you need to read in each session. It helps you stay on track and also allows you to get things done faster than you anticipate.

7- Take care of yourself

Health care is very important, and you should pay attention to it. You can spend many hours studying and preparing for PSAT math, but you should eat well, drink plenty of water, and exercise. These actions help you to focus when preparing for PSAT math.

8- Create a study environment without distractions

Mathematics is a subject that needs more focus than any other subject. A good, distraction-free study environment can be a decisive factor when solving complex equations! Therefore, it is important to study in a quiet and private study space with proper lighting and a complete study routine.

9- Evaluate your study plan and change if necessary

Your curriculum will help you become more productive and efficient. Do not be disappointed if you find that your study program does not work. You know what works best for you, so make some changes to your PSAT math schedule.

10- Maximize the effectiveness

Studies show that 10 to 15 minutes of rest every 1 hour improves your ability to concentrate and can also have a positive effect on your study plan so that you do not have more stress.

Finally, keep in mind that while a degree program can help you pass the PSAT math test, it does not work alone, and the final success of the test depends on your willpower and performance.
