Sentence Variety: Fixing Choppy and Overloaded Writing
Sentence variety is not decoration. It helps a reader see which ideas belong together and which idea deserves emphasis. On an editing test, the best revision is the one that improves rhythm and logic without deleting a fact, inventing a connection, or creating a run-on.
When should short sentences be combined?
Combine when two short sentences express one logical unit. The clinic extended its hours. More patients could come after work. The relationship is cause and result: The clinic extended its hours, so more patients could come after work. Do not combine merely because the sentences are short. If the relationship is unclear, a forced connector can change the writer’s meaning.
When should a long sentence be divided?
Divide when a reader must hold too many equal ideas or when independent clauses are joined incorrectly. The volunteers sorted the donations, the driver loaded the van, and the coordinator called the shelter, the work ended by noon is overloaded and contains a comma splice. Two sentences give each stage room and repair the boundary.
| Draft problem | Useful revision |
|---|---|
| Repeated short subject-verb sentences | Combine related ideas with an accurate connector |
| Every sentence begins the same way | Move a transition or dependent clause to the opening |
| One sentence carries too many equal ideas | Divide at a complete-thought boundary |
| Important point disappears inside a long sentence | Let the key point stand in a shorter sentence |

A four-step test-day routine
- Read the paragraph aloud and notice repeated beats.
- Name the relationship between nearby ideas.
- Combine, divide, or reorder only where that relationship becomes clearer.
- Reread for complete sentences, accurate punctuation, and preserved meaning.
Practice
- Combine: “The bus was delayed. I called my supervisor.”
- Why is because better than however in that revision?
- What problem appears when five sentences all begin with The committee?
- What must remain unchanged during a variety revision?
- When can a short sentence be effective?
- What final check catches a risky combination?
Answers and reasons
- One answer: Because the bus was delayed, I called my supervisor.
- The ideas have a cause-and-result relationship, not a contrast.
- The opening pattern becomes repetitive and can hide relationships.
- The writer’s meaning and all necessary facts.
- When it gives a key idea deliberate emphasis.
- Verify that each clause boundary and connector is grammatically correct and logically accurate.
