Skills learners will build
The opening chapters establish the essentials: complete sentences, clauses, fragments, run-ons, comma splices, parts of speech, word forms, subject–verb agreement, verb tense, pronoun case and reference, modifier placement, capitalization, punctuation, spelling patterns, and effective use of reference tools.

Learners practice reading two sources, identifying the central disagreement, choosing a defensible position, planning efficiently, using relevant evidence, explaining how evidence supports a claim, addressing another viewpoint, and revising a focused response before time expires.
