TExES Core Subjects EC-6 Mathematics Practice Center

Take a full 70-minute form, then read the explanation under every question you missed. Note whether the miss was arithmetic or one of the teaching items, where the question is what a child’s work shows. Those need different fixes.

TExES Core Subjects EC-6 Mathematics at a glance

This is the mathematics subtest of Core Subjects EC-6, the certification test for Texas elementary teachers. Forty questions in seventy minutes is a comfortable pace, and the mathematics stops around middle school. What surprises candidates is how much of it is not computation: the first and last competencies are about how children learn mathematics and how mathematicians reason, and together they carry a quarter of the questions on this form.

Subtest code 902 (Mathematics)
Part of TExES Core Subjects EC-6, test code 391, alongside English Language Arts and Reading (901), Social Studies (903), Science (904), and Fine Arts, Health and Physical Education (905). Each subtest can be taken and retaken on its own.
Number of questions 40 selected-response questions
Answer options Four per question
Time limit 1 hour 10 minutes
Format Computer-administered. Items include direct questions, word problems, and questions built on student work, a figure, a table, or a graph.
Competencies Six: mathematics instruction, number concepts and operations, patterns and algebra, geometry and measurement, probability and statistics, and mathematical processes.
Passing score A scaled score of 240.

Texas does not publish how many questions come from each competency on this subtest, so any percentage breakdown you find in a commercial guide is that publisher’s estimate. Treat all six as testable, and note that two of them are about teaching and reasoning rather than content.

The six competencies, in plain language

Texas states each competency in one sentence. Here they are, with what each one asks of you.

Competency 001: Mathematics instruction

The teacher understands how students learn mathematical skills and uses that knowledge to plan, organize and implement instruction and assess learning.

  • Read a child’s strategy and name what it shows
  • Sequence instruction along a learning progression
  • Choose manipulatives and representations that fit the idea
  • Use assessment to decide what to teach next
  • Plan for the range of learners in an elementary classroom

Competency 002: Number concepts and operations

The teacher understands concepts related to numbers, operations and algorithms and the properties of numbers.

  • Place value, number sense, and estimation
  • Operations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and integers
  • Properties of operations and the order of operations
  • Factors, multiples, primes, GCF and LCM
  • Ratio, proportion, and percent
  • Standard algorithms and why they work

Competency 003: Patterns and algebra

The teacher understands concepts related to patterns, relations, functions and algebraic reasoning.

  • Extend and describe patterns with a rule
  • Write and solve expressions, equations, and inequalities
  • Represent a relationship as a table, graph, and equation
  • Understand the equal sign as balance rather than an answer signal
  • Read slope and rate of change from a linear situation

Competency 004: Geometry and measurement

The teacher understands concepts and principles of geometry and measurement.

  • Classify two- and three-dimensional figures by properties
  • Angle relationships, congruence, and similarity
  • Perimeter, area, surface area, and volume
  • Coordinate plane and transformations
  • Measurement units, conversion, and precision

Competency 005: Probability and statistics

The teacher understands concepts related to probability and statistics and their applications.

  • Collect, display, and interpret data
  • Measures of center and spread, and when each is appropriate
  • Read bar graphs, line plots, circle graphs, and box plots
  • Simple and compound probability
  • Judge a conclusion drawn from data

Competency 006: Mathematical processes

The teacher understands mathematical processes and knows how to reason mathematically, solve mathematical problems and make mathematical connections within and outside of mathematics.

  • Choose and justify a problem solving strategy
  • Reason inductively and deductively
  • Connect mathematics to other subjects and to daily life
  • Communicate mathematical thinking with precision
  • Judge whether an answer is reasonable

A study routine that fits 70 minutes of testing

Under two minutes a question is enough time if the formulas are already in your head. The part worth rehearsing is reading a child’s work quickly and saying what it shows.

DiagnoseTake Practice Test 1 cold, all 40 questions in 70 minutes. Sort your misses into content and teaching. They are different problems.
Rebuild the contentFor each content miss, open the lesson it points to and work it until the method is automatic. Fractions and proportional reasoning are where most points go.
Learn the teaching languageRun the deck until subitizing, unitizing, partial products, compensation, and the area model are yours. These words appear in stems and in answer choices.
Prove itTake Practice Test 2 under the same conditions. On any teaching item you miss, write one sentence naming what the child already understands.

Before test day

Two competencies decide this subtest for most candidates, and neither is arithmetic. The first asks what a child’s strategy reveals, and the answer is almost always the choice that builds on what the child already did rather than the one that restarts with the standard algorithm. The last asks whether an answer is reasonable and whether the reasoning holds. Practice saying both out loud and the content questions take care of themselves.
