Both forms are the full 100 questions, built to the published domain percentages, with clustered items on longer scenarios the way the real test does it. Read the explanation under every question you missed; on this test every wrong choice is something a real teacher might do, and knowing why it loses is the whole skill.

The TExES PPR at a glance

Every Texas candidate for a standard certificate sits this test, from prekindergarten through twelfth grade and in every subject. There is no content knowledge on it. It hands you a classroom and asks what a competent teacher does next, and the wrong answers are all things real teachers do. Five hours is generous for 100 questions, which means the difficulty is judgment rather than time.

Who takes it Essentially every Texas candidate for a standard certificate, in every subject and grade band.

Answer options Four per question
Time limit 5 hours
Format Computer-administered. Most items are classroom scenarios; some come in clustered sets built on a longer description of a teacher, a class, or a school situation.
Domain weighting Designing instruction and assessment 34%, Creating a positive, productive classroom environment 13%, Implementing effective, responsive instruction and assessment 33%, Fulfilling professional roles and responsibilities 20%.
Passing score A scaled score of 240.

Texas publishes the domain percentages, and they are worth reading as a study plan. Domains I and III together are two thirds of the test, and both come down to the same question: does the teacher act on evidence about these students? Domain II is only 13 percent, which surprises candidates who expect classroom management to dominate.

The four domains and thirteen competencies

Texas states each competency in one long sentence. Here they are, with what each one actually asks you to do.

Domain I: Designing instruction and assessment to promote student learning (34% of the test)

Competencies 001, 002, 003, 004

  • The teacher understands human developmental processes and applies this knowledge to plan instruction and ongoing assessment that motivate students and are responsive to their developmental characteristics and needs.
  • The teacher understands the variety of students and knows how to plan learning experiences and design assessments that are responsive to differences among students and that promote all students’ learning.
  • The teacher understands procedures for designing effective and coherent instruction and assessment based on appropriate learning goals and objectives.
  • The teacher understands learning processes and factors that impact student learning and demonstrates this knowledge by planning effective, engaging instruction and appropriate assessments.

Domain II: Creating a positive, productive classroom environment (13% of the test)

Competencies 005, 006

  • The teacher knows how to establish a classroom climate that creates learning, fairness and excellence and uses this knowledge to create a physical and emotional environment that is safe and productive.
  • The teacher understands strategies for creating an organized and productive learning environment and for managing student behavior.

Domain III: Implementing effective, responsive instruction and assessment (33% of the test)

  • The teacher understands the importance of family involvement in children’s education and knows how to interact and communicate effectively with families.
  • The teacher improves professional knowledge and skills by effectively interacting with other members of the educational community and participating in various types of professional activities.
  • The teacher understands and adheres to legal and ethical requirements for educators and is knowledgeable of the structure of education in Texas.

A study routine that fits a five-hour test

Five hours is three minutes per question, so time is not the enemy. Consistency is. The candidates who fail this test are usually the ones whose judgment drifts somewhere in the third hour toward whichever answer sounds most supportive.

DiagnoseTake Practice Test 1 cold, all 100 questions in one sitting. Do not split it. You need to see what your judgment does in hour three.
Learn the reasoning, not the answersFor each miss, write one sentence naming why your choice was wrong: premature, punitive, lowers the demand, skips the data, treats the symptom, hands off your job, breaks a duty. Those seven reasons cover most of this test.
Learn the Texas layerDomain IV is a fifth of the test and the most learnable part of it. The Educators’ Code of Ethics, reporting duties, student records, and how SBEC, TEA, the State Board of Education, and your district fit together.
Prove itTake Practice Test 2 under the same conditions and compare your accuracy in the last 25 questions against the first 25. If it drops, the fix is another full sitting, not more reading.

Before test day

On any scenario, decide what the evidence in front of you actually shows before you read the choices. When two answers both look reasonable, take the one that keeps the student doing the thinking and that responds to what the teacher already knows about this class. Domain IV is the exception: there the rule decides rather than your judgment, so learn the duties cold and take those twenty points.
