Praxis Elementary Mathematics Practice Center

Take a full 100-minute form, then read the explanation under every question you missed. Watch which misses are arithmetic and which are the Tasks of Teaching items, where the question is what a child’s work shows. Those need different fixes.

Praxis Elementary Mathematics at a glance

This is the mathematics subtest of the Elementary Education Fundamentals series, the battery that replaced the old 5002 to 5005 subtests. The mathematics itself stops around middle school. What catches candidates out is that roughly one question in eight is a Task of Teaching Mathematics: it shows you a child’s work and asks what the child understands, not what the answer is.

Test code 8003 (Elementary Education Fundamentals: Mathematics)
Replaces The Elementary Education Multiple Subjects mathematics subtest, 5003.
Number of questions 68 selected-response and numeric-entry questions
Time limit 100 minutes
Section timing From September 1, 2026 each category is timed separately: 40 minutes for Numbers and Operations, 30 for Algebraic Thinking, 30 for Geometry, Measurement, and Data.
Calculator An on-screen scientific calculator is provided.
Content categories Numbers and operations 42%, Algebraic thinking 29%, Geometry, measurement, and data 29%.
Tasks of Teaching Mathematics About 10 to 15 percent of the questions show student reasoning or an instructional situation rather than asking you to compute.
Passing score Set by each state, so check the requirement where you are certifying.

ETS publishes both the percentages and the per-category timing, and the timing is the part worth planning around. Forty minutes for 28 questions in Numbers and Operations is about 85 seconds each, and you cannot borrow time from a later category to finish it.

The three categories, in plain language

ETS groups the subtest into three separately timed categories. Here is what each one actually asks you to do.

Category 1: Numbers and operations (42%, 40 minutes)

Can you compute with rational numbers and explain why the procedure works?

  • Work in the base-ten place value system, including expanded form and powers of ten
  • Apply the properties of operations and the order of operations to rational numbers
  • Solve multistep problems with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, and judge whether an answer is reasonable
  • Use factors, multiples, greatest common factor, and least common multiple
  • Convert among fractions, decimals, and percents and compare them
  • Solve ratio, unit rate, proportional relationship, and percent problems
  • Recognize what a student’s method shows about place value or operation sense

Category 2: Algebraic thinking (29%, 30 minutes)

Can you turn a pattern or a situation into an expression or an equation?

  • Write, evaluate, and manipulate expressions, equations, and inequalities
  • Decide whether two expressions are equivalent
  • Solve one-variable equations and use formulas
  • Extend and describe a pattern with a rule
  • Represent a linear relationship as a table, a graph, and an equation
  • Model a real-world situation with an expression or equation and read the solution back into context

Category 3: Geometry, measurement, and data (29%, 30 minutes)

Can you reason about shape, measurement, and a data display?

  • Identify and classify lines, angles, and two- and three-dimensional shapes by their properties
  • Compose and decompose shapes, and recognize symmetry
  • Plot and interpret points on the coordinate plane
  • Find perimeter, area, volume, and surface area
  • Convert measurement units and solve elapsed time problems
  • Read and interpret data displays, and compute measures of center and spread

A study routine that fits three timed sections

Because each category is timed on its own, a weak area cannot be rescued by speed elsewhere. Find the weak category first, then spend your time there.

DiagnoseTake Practice Test 1 cold, in one sitting, with only a calculator. Score it by category rather than overall. That number tells you where the 100 minutes are actually going.
Rebuild the contentFor every content item you missed, open the lesson it points to and work it until the method is automatic. Fraction division and percent change are the two that cost the most points.
Practice reading student workFor every Task of Teaching item you missed, write one sentence saying what the child does understand. The correct choice is nearly always built on that rather than starting over.
Prove itTake Practice Test 2 under the same conditions, and time each category separately. If a category runs long, the fix is fluency in that content, not faster reading.

Forty-seven lessons covering the mathematics this subtest expects you to know cold. Each one opens in a new tab so you can keep this page open while you work.

Before test day

Most candidates who miss the mark here are not weak at arithmetic. They lose points in two specific places: fraction and decimal work under time pressure, and the Tasks of Teaching items where a child has done something sensible but incomplete. The habit that fixes the second one is small. Every time you look at student work between now and test day, say out loud what the child does understand before you say what went wrong.
