What Are the 4 Methods to Prove Triangles Are Congruent?
In geometry, proving that two triangles are congruent means showing they have exactly the same size and shape. There are four main methods (plus a fifth for right triangles) that mathematicians use. Once you know these, you can tackle most triangle congruence proofs with confidence.

The Four Main Methods to Prove Triangle Congruence
1. SSS (Side-Side-Side)
If three sides of one triangle are congruent to three sides of another triangle, the triangles are congruent. Abbreviation: SSS. This is the most intuitive—if all sides match, the triangles must be identical. For practice, check our free math worksheets.
2. SAS (Side-Angle-Side)
If two sides and the included angle (the angle between those two sides) of one triangle are congruent to two sides and the included angle of another, the triangles are congruent. The angle must be between the sides—order matters.
3. ASA (Angle-Side-Angle)
If two angles and the included side (the side between those two angles) of one triangle are congruent to two angles and the included side of another, the triangles are congruent. Very useful when you have parallel lines and transversals.
4. AAS (Angle-Angle-Side)
If two angles and a non-included side of one triangle are congruent to two angles and the corresponding non-included side of another, the triangles are congruent. Why it works: if two angles match, the third does too (angles sum to 180°), so AAS reduces to ASA. Visit Effortless Math for more geometry help.
The Fifth Method: HL (Right Triangles Only)
For right triangles: if the hypotenuse and one leg of one triangle are congruent to the hypotenuse and one leg of another, the triangles are congruent. HL applies only when both triangles have a right angle.
What Does NOT Work
SSA (Side-Side-Angle) and AAA (Angle-Angle-Angle) do not prove congruence. SSA can produce two different triangles (the “ambiguous case”). AAA only proves similarity, not congruence. Always use one of the four (or five) valid methods. Our math books cover these in depth.
Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there no SSA congruence?
Given two sides and a non-included angle, you can sometimes draw two different triangles. So SSA doesn’t guarantee a unique triangle.
Is AAS the same as SAA?
Yes. AAS and SAA both mean two angles and a non-included side. The order of the letters doesn’t change the theorem.
