Can You Change Answers on the NREMT AEMT Exam? (2027 Prep)
Can you change an answer on the NREMT AEMT exam? Yes, before you advance to the next item. Once you submit an answer and move on, the current official AEMT Test Plan says you cannot return to change it. You must answer each item. An item left blank when time expires is scored incorrect. If you have seen advice to skip an item and come back later, that comes from older test guidance.
The current AEMT Test Plan, linked from the Registry’s AEMT examination page, describes a fixed-length linear computer test. Its answer rule is specific: choose a response, change it before advancing if needed, submit, then move forward. The plan says you cannot reopen that item after submission.
Keep the certification level straight, too. NREMT administers the AEMT exam as a fixed-length linear computer test. Its current overview says EMR, EMT, and Paramedic exams use computerized adaptive testing (CAT). Advice about navigation at another level may not fit the AEMT screen, so check that a practice tool is labeled for AEMT.
Before you advance and after you submit
Before advancing
Current plan: You may change your answer to the current item.
Use that moment: Read the whole prompt, check your selected response, and make any final correction before moving on.
When you advance
Current plan: You submit an answer. Each item requires a response.
Use that moment: Follow the on-screen instructions for the item type, then move forward when your response is ready.
After submission
Current plan: You cannot return to that item to modify your answer.
Use that moment: Treat the submit/advance step as the point when your response becomes final.
Your review window is that one moment before you advance. Take a breath, reread the instruction, then submit when you are ready.
Why do some pages say you can go back?
Some online guidance combines information from different exam versions. The Registry’s 2019 AEMT handbook says candidates could skip questions, mark them for review, and return while time remained. The current AEMT plan describes a later exam design and gives a different rule for the answer after you advance. The AEMT certification exam was updated on July 1, 2024. When you find older instructions, check the date and compare them with the current AEMT Test Plan linked from the Registry’s active exam page.
Practice apps may let you flag questions, see rationales, or edit answers in a review screen. Those features can help you study. Treat them as practice settings and check the live exam rules against the Registry. Some currently available guidance describes skip-and-return behavior that conflicts with the current Test Plan’s submitted-answer rule.
Read the response instructions for each item
The AEMT exam uses several response formats. The official plan describes multiple-choice and multiple-response questions, plus Build List, Drag-and-Drop, Options Box, graphical, and scenario-based items. A scenario-based item can use any of the listed formats. The item instructions tell you what to do with the information on screen.
Multiple choice
What you do: Select one of four options.
Check before advancing: Confirm the selected option answers the exact question.
Multiple response
What you do: Select two or three answers from five or six options.
Check before advancing: Count your selections against the instruction. The plan says items are scored correct or incorrect, with no partial credit.
Build List
What you do: Place options in the order the prompt requests.
Check before advancing: Check both the requested order and every placed option.
Drag-and-Drop
What you do: Move options into the requested categories or positions.
Check before advancing: Check the destination of each moved option.
Options Box
What you do: Classify options in a table using the stated criteria.
Check before advancing: Read the row and column labels, then check each classification.
Graphical or scenario-based
What you do: Use the displayed graphic or scenario information with one of the item formats above.
Check before advancing: Keep the graphic or scenario in view while following the specific item instructions.
These checks are about responding to the screen, not about choosing a clinical action. Stay with the exact directions shown for each item. If an instruction is unfamiliar, the current Registry exam page says the tutorial explains how to respond to the item types, and that instructions remain available through the Help function.
A calm routine for the final few seconds
- Read the entire prompt and identify the response format.
- Make your selection, arrangement, or classification exactly as instructed.
- Check required counts, order, categories, and any selected options.
- Ask whether the response answers the question that appears on screen.
- Change it now if needed, before advancing.
- Submit and move on knowing the current plan does not allow you to reopen the item.
Use this routine to spend a few seconds checking each response. If your practice app has a review screen, remember that its controls may differ from the official exam. App explanations can still help you learn the content. Check exam navigation rules against current NREMT materials.
How to choose realistic practice
Before you pay for a question bank or full simulator, check whether its format matches the learner task you want to practice. Does it include the AEMT item types named by the Registry? Does it show clear instructions for multiple-response and interactive questions? Does its simulator lock a submitted answer, or does it permit review later? A practice mode can still be useful when its navigation differs from the real exam. Label the mode you are using so the distinction stays clear.

Sources and scope
This is an exam-preparation guide to answer navigation and computer response formats. It contains original examples, not protected NREMT questions or clinical-care instructions. The answer-change rule and response types are taken from the current AEMT Test Plan linked on the National Registry’s examination information page. The older AEMT handbook is cited to explain why conflicting legacy instructions remain online, and the current plan is the navigation source used here.
