ISEE Math- Test Day Tips

The Independent School Entrance Exam is as known as ISEE, is an examination created and administered by the Educational Records Bureau (ERB). The ISEE tests students’ individual academic achievements and reasoning skills as a basis for admission to private schools in the United States and internationally. The ISEE test is accepted by more than 1,200 institutions worldwide. The purpose of this test is to quantify your academic achievement and your reasoning ability.

ISEE is divided into students in specific age brackets and four levels:

  • Primary (entrance to grades 2-4)
  • Lower (entrance to grades 5-6)
  • Middle (entrance to grades 7-8)
  • Upper (entrance to grades 9-12)

The Lower, Middle and Upper-Level ISEE exams consist of five sections with separate timing: Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Verbal Reasoning, Mathematics Achievement, Essay (optional).

The ISEE test has two mathematics sections: Quantitative Reasoning and Mathematics Achievement. Like any other test, ISEE mathematics is difficult. But you can succeed in this test if you prepare well for this test.

You have prepared for the ISEE test by planning and studying. Now is the day for the exam. Have the best performance on the day of the test by reading these important tips.

The Night before the Test!

Eat right

You want to eat healthy with a good mix of good carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Probably the best thing to do is to avoid a massive carbohydrate that only makes you fall asleep with a sugar crash. You may also want to avoid caffeine overdose. Drink plenty of water for proper brain function. You want to get the most out of your food and drink, but do not use it to the point of reducing efficiency.

Pack your bag

Prepare everything the night before so you can spend the next morning eating a healthy breakfast and read an article or a book to wake up your brain. Necessary items usually include an admission ticket, two No. 2 pencils, an eraser, and an approved ID.

Check test center info

Make sure you know where you are going! The morning ISEE is not the time to figure out how long it takes to get to the testing center.

Set an alarm

Make sure you set the alarm clock early enough to have enough time to wake up and eat breakfast. You do not want to be rushed and late the morning of – it only stresses you out even more.

Get enough sleep

If you do only one thing, it is: Get enough sleep the night before the exam. Deep sleep is very important for memory formation. During enough sleep, new connections are made between brain cells and create memories of your day. Aim for eight hours before the big day to achieve the optimal number of cycles of a memory-promoting deep sleep. After a hard day of learning and study, take a good night’s rest, as it helps your brain retain as much information as possible.

On Test Day!

Eat a power breakfast

Breakfast is a very important meal – it can either break or make your day. A high-performance breakfast is a good source of protein for alertness (eggs or Greek yogurt), whole-grain carbohydrates for sustained mental energy (porridge is great) as well as fruits or vegetables for maximum brainpower.

Wear appropriate dress

Be comfortable. One way to stay comfortable is to dress appropriately, as the exam room may be too hot or too cold for you.

Double-check everything

Before leaving the house, check all the equipment and make sure that you have removed everything.

Arrive early

Plan to arrive early. It is recommended that you go to the test center at least one hour early because you never know what will happen, whether it is bad traffic, a flat tire, or a speeding ticket.

During the Test!

Read carefully

One of the most common mistakes in ISEE is to misread a question, which is usually due to speed reading. To avoid careless mistakes, be sure to spend a few more seconds on each question. Underline important words to avoid mistakes.

Answer every question

There are no penalties for incorrect answers in ISEE, so be sure to answer any question and guess if necessary. In each section, write down the time and use the last few minutes to mark each question.

Remember to breathe

If at any time during the test you feel frightened or stressed, drop your pencil and take a few deep breaths. Imagine yourself visualizing calm images and relaxing. Deep breaths help you clear your mind and fill your blood with oxygen.

Work backward

For some questions, the jump point is in the answers. Take advantage of the fact that ISEE gives you more information than just a question: it also gives you answer options, one of which you know must be the correct answer!

For questions with unknown values, you can replace the answer options with unknown values to see which one is correct. Always start by choosing the middle answer to minimize the number of answers you have to replace.

Manage your time

For example, the middle-level ISEE Mathematics Achievement section lasts an average of 40 minutes, in which students must answer 47 questions. By limiting time, students may forget to answer any questions, or they may accidentally shadow an unwanted answer on their scantron. It’s important to take at least 3 to 5 minutes towards the end of the test to ensure that all answers are completed.

Educated guessing

Despite all your efforts and strategies, there may be questions that you simply do not know how to answer. Do not let these things put you overwhelm or disappoint you, as there are still some steps you to take to respond. You may have heard that if all other ways lead to failure, you should choose the same answer option for your guesses, such as answer choice B. Ignore this advice. Standard test makers do not have the preferred answer option for them to choose others, and you have the same option to choose of being correct picking B as you do picking A, C, or D.

Instead, try to increase your chances of getting the answer right by reducing the choice of answer options. In other words, the removal process.

Using test and answer booklets

Although you will not be given a scratch paper, you can write your entire test booklet. However, your answer booklet should not have additional markings, aside from bubbled answers and your written essay on the two provided pages.

Also, ERB does not matter if you mark a wrong answer in your answer booklet. The wrong answer is the wrong answer, and you will not be given the option to retrieve ISEE. Therefore, make sure that your answers are clear and bubbled on your answer booklet.

After the Test!

Do not think about it after the exam because you cannot do anything. You only stress yourself by thinking. So have fun spending time with friends, watching movies or whatever you enjoy.

If you pass the exam, congratulations! Do not be upset if you do not accept. Prepare for the next test with planning and a lot of practice.
