ASWB Study Plan: Audit Old Notes Against Three Content Areas (2027 Prep)

Start an ASWB study plan by checking what each set of old notes actually covers against the current outline for your exam category. A familiar chapter title can hide a missing concept, while a chapter that moved in the outline may still contain useful material that deserves a closer review.

ASWB's launch notice confirms that the exams introduced on August 3, 2026 use three content areas rather than four, reflecting consolidated knowledge statements. Its exam overview identifies Bachelors, Masters, Advanced Generalist and Clinical as separate categories. Three areas do not establish that their detailed content or your study needs are identical.

You can use the worked note audit (CSV) to see four invented note-audit situations and the blank note crosswalk (CSV) to build your own topic-level crosswalk. Keep the original notes available. The example demonstrates decisions about study materials, with no claim that any particular chapter has been mapped to an official applied knowledge statement.

Choose one category before moving your notes

The official guidebook landing page identifies category-specific content outlines, including content areas, competencies and applied knowledge statements, together with preparation references. Use your own category's outline. Record its edition and the location of the statement you are reviewing, so a later correction can be traced to the source that prompted it. Do this before dividing your notes into three new folders.

Folder names are only containers. If you begin by assigning every old chapter to a new area, you can make an orderly filing system without checking whether the chapter supplies the knowledge or application the current statement requires.

Keep source verification separate from your confidence in the topic. Both can be incomplete. You might know a concept well but have the wrong category open, or have the right source while still needing instruction on the concept.

Build a crosswalk small enough to use

Start with one statement and the section of your notes that appears relevant, then write a brief description of the connection in your own words. Add a page or heading reference. A topic label alone is weak evidence because it cannot show which part of the statement the notes explain or which part remains uncovered.

If two sections contribute different pieces, keep both references in the same record. You do not need a one-to-one match. The purpose is to locate usable coverage and identify gaps, so an old chapter may contribute to several targets and a current target may require material from several sources.

Leave a mapping unresolved when you cannot establish the connection.

Ask an instructor or check an appropriate current reference before treating the entry as covered. An unresolved row is useful information for planning, and moving it into a folder should not silently change its status.

Read four invented note-audit situations

In the worked audit, N1 is a fictional page containing a definition but no explanation of how the concept guides a decision. Preserve the definition for review. The next action is to check the applicable current target and find suitable instruction on application, with the official mapping and learning outcome still unverified.

N2 contains an unsupported instruction that says to take the same action in every situation. Mark it for qualified review. N3 repeats the same concept in two chapters and can be consolidated for study after checking that the second passage adds no distinct information.

N4 represents a target for which the learner has not located any notes yet. Search the remaining materials before declaring it absent. If the gap remains, select a current reference or ask an instructor, then record the resource you intend to use rather than marking the topic completed because a resource was found.

These are invented audit records. They contain no clinical case, official target wording or verified chapter-to-outline assignment, and all actual results and review dates remain blank.

Note Observed material Proposed action
N1 Definition only Check application
N2 Always rule Qualified review
N3 Repeated concept Check and combine
N4 No notes located Find a reference

Distinguish a coverage gap from a learning difficulty

Suppose your selected materials omit an identified part of the current target. That is a coverage gap. If the explanation is available but you cannot retrieve a studied concept, the immediate difficulty concerns recall, while a mistaken connection between relevant knowledge and a decision calls for reasoning review.

Write the observation first. If you cannot recall a term, return to an accurate explanation and revisit it later without looking, while a missing source requires locating suitable instruction before a recall check can help. Record what happened during that later review instead of treating your planned activity as evidence of improvement.

For reasoning work, describe the mistaken assumption or connection in your own words after reviewing authorized study material. Keep source references private. The blank record does not ask you to copy exam questions, clinical records or answer choices, and subject-specific decisions should be checked with qualified instruction.

Allocate the next session to the observed problem

The session allocation record (CSV) illustrates one invented 90-minute study session built from three unresolved audit needs. It is adjustable. The learner proposes 20 minutes to locate a missing reference, 25 minutes to revisit a definition and 45 minutes to review an unsupported rule with suitable instruction, with no claim that these durations are optimal.

The total is 20 plus 25 plus 45, or 90 minutes. Actual time is blank. A task can remain incomplete when its planned time ends, and the next session should account for that result instead of assuming the calendar proves the problem was resolved.

This example does not distribute hours according to official area weights. Check those in your own current category's source when planning broad coverage. Within that plan, a topic's observed gap and the availability of appropriate instruction help determine the next useful action.

Return to the record after studying

After a session, add the resource actually used and the result you observed. Be specific about the limit. You might locate the right chapter and read it while still being unable to explain the concept, so record each observation separately before deciding what needs another review. An accurate explanation provides evidence about that concept, with no claim that it certifies exam readiness.

Revisit unresolved mappings as you obtain better sources or instructor guidance. That history makes it easier to correct an unsupported assignment and prevents a renamed folder from becoming the only evidence that your notes cover the current outline.

For official preparation materials, return to your category's resources through the official guidebook landing page. Clinical candidates can also use our ASWB Clinical study hub. The hub covers Clinical, so candidates preparing for another ASWB category should continue with the appropriate official outline and preparation references for that category.

This tutorial supplies an author-created note-audit method, not a verified chapter-to-AKS crosswalk or reproduction of an official study template. No Guidebook PDF, worksheet or assessment contents inspected. Fictional records and the 90-minute allocation are teaching examples, not observed learning results or a readiness threshold.
