Use the following steps:
- Line up your numerals so the ones, the tens, the hundreds, and the thousands are each under the corresponding numeral. The biggest number ought to be on top while the lesser number is put at the bottom
- Begin doing subtraction in the column to the right. Then move to the left, and as needed do borrowing and regrouping.
- Write your answer precisely underneath the column of the corresponding figure and place a \($\) or \(¢\) sign in front of the answer.
Subtraction of Amounts of Money – Example 1:
Subtract
\(\begin{array}{r} &$533\\ -\!\!\!\!\!&$412\\ \hline \end{array} \)
Solution:
First line up the numbers: \(\begin{array}{r} &$533\\ -\!\!\!\!\!&$412\\ \hline \end{array}→ \) subtract the numerals in the ones’ spot column \((3 – 2 = 1)\) and put the resulting answer under the line. \(\begin{array}{r} &$533\\ -\!\!\!\!\!\!&$412 \\ \hline \end{array} \\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ 1\), Continue with tens’ place. \(3 \ – \ 1=2\), \(\begin{array}{r} &$533\\ -\!\!\!\!\!\!&$412 \\ \hline \end{array} \\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ 2\). Subtract the numerals in the hundreds’ spot column then out this answer under the line, \(5 \ – \ 4=1\), \(\begin{array}{r} &$533\\ -\!\!\!\!\!\!&$412 \\ \hline \end{array} \\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ 1\). \(\begin{array}{r} &$533\\ -\!\!\!\!\!\!&$412 \\ \hline \end{array} \\ \ \ \ \ \ \ $121\)
Subtraction of Amounts of Money – Example 2:
Subtract
\(\begin{array}{r} &$767\\ -\!\!\!\!\!&$345\\ \hline \end{array} \)
Solution:
First line up the numbers: \(\begin{array}{r} &$767\\ -\!\!\!\!\!&$345\\ \hline \end{array}→ \) subtract the numerals in the ones’ spot column \((7 – 5 = 2)\) and put the resulting answer under the line. \(\begin{array}{r} &$767\\ -\!\!\!\!\!\!&$345 \\ \hline \end{array} \\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ 2\), Continue with tens’ place. \(6 \ – \ 4=2\), \(\begin{array}{r} &$767\\ -\!\!\!\!\!\!&$345 \\ \hline \end{array} \\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ 2\). Subtract the numerals in the hundreds’ spot column then out this answer under the line, \(7 \ – \ 3=4\), \(\begin{array}{r} &$767\\ -\!\!\!\!\!\!&$345 \\ \hline \end{array} \\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ 4\). \(\begin{array}{r} &$767\\ -\!\!\!\!\!\!&$345 \\ \hline \end{array} \\ \ \ \ \ \ \ $422\)
