HiSET Passing Score: What You Need on Each Subtest and in Total
Quick answer: To pass the HiSET, you need at least 8 out of 20 on each of the five subtests, at least 2 out of 6 on the Language Arts Writing essay, and a combined total of at least 45 out of 100. Scoring 8 everywhere adds up to only 40, so you need extra points somewhere. Your state can add its own credential requirements.
If you are getting ready for the HiSET, the first number to know is the passing score, and the second is how far you are from it. This post explains how HiSET scoring works as of October 2026: what you need on each subtest and in total, how retakes and score reports work, and how to turn the math minimum into a study plan you can start this week.
The HiSET passing score at a glance
The HiSET exam was developed by ETS and is delivered by PSI. The official site is hiset.org, so if you find an older hiset.ets.org page or PDF, check its numbers against the current site. Each of the five subtests (Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies) is reported on a scale of 1 to 20. According to the HiSET Test Taker Bulletin 2026, you pass the full battery when you meet all three of these requirements:
- A score of at least 8 on each of the five subtests.
- A score of at least 2 out of 6 on the essay part of the Language Arts Writing subtest.
- A combined total of at least 45 across all five subtests.
| Requirement | Minimum | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Each subtest (scale 1 to 20) | 8 | Applies to Reading, Writing, Math, Science and Social Studies |
| Writing essay (scale 1 to 6) | 2 | Must be earned on the same test date as the Writing multiple-choice section |
| Total of all five subtests (out of 100) | 45 | Five scores of 8 add up to only 40 |
| College and career readiness (optional) | 15 on a subtest, 4 on the essay | Not needed to pass; a separate benchmark |
We explain the scaled scoring itself (why a 20-point scale is used on tests with different numbers of questions) in how the HiSET test is scored. This post focuses on what those numbers mean for passing.
Why 8 on every subtest is not enough
This is the rule that surprises people most. Eight is the minimum on each subtest, but 8 times 5 is 40, and the battery needs 45. So at least one subtest has to come in above 8, or several have to come in a little above it. The table shows three possible results.
| Student | Reading | Writing (essay) | Math | Science | Social Studies | Total | Passes? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 8 | 8 (2) | 8 | 8 | 8 | 40 | No, total is below 45 |
| B | 11 | 9 (3) | 8 | 9 | 9 | 46 | Yes |
| C | 14 | 12 (4) | 7 | 10 | 11 | 54 | No, math is below 8 |
Student C shows that a high total cannot rescue a single subtest below 8. Student A shows the opposite problem: every subtest is passed, but the total is short, so A needs to raise at least one score by retaking a subtest. Because your report keeps your highest score on each subtest, one strong retake can close that gap.
Does the HiSET passing score change by state?
The 8, 2 and 45 standard is set for the whole HiSET program. PSI’s HiSET resource hub for adult educators notes that a state may set a higher passing standard, but no state can allow a pass with a total below 45. What varies much more from state to state is everything around the score:
- Minimum age, residency, or a required preparation course before testing.
- Extra credential requirements, such as a civics exam.
- Fees, retest rules and whether you can test at home or on paper.
- Which high school equivalency tests the state offers at all. Texas, for example, lists HiSET score requirements only for tests taken from January 2017 through August 2021 on its TEA page.
Before you schedule, open your state’s page from the HiSET state requirements list. As of October 2026 it lists 32 states and territories. If your state is not on it, check with your state’s high school equivalency office.
What “passing” means for your credential
Passing the battery is the testing part of the job. The credential itself comes from your state. HiSET’s scores and credentials page explains that once you pass all subtests and meet your state’s other requirements, the state issues a high school equivalency diploma or certificate and mails it to the address in your HiSET account. Extra transcripts or digital certificates are ordered through the state, not through PSI.
Passing is also different from being college ready. A score of 15 or higher on a subtest (with at least 4 on the essay for Writing) is HiSET’s college and career readiness benchmark. If you plan to start college math soon, a math score well above 8 will make that first course easier, even though 8 is enough for the credential.
The HiSET math subtest: format and calculator
Math is the subtest people most often need to retake, so it helps to know exactly what you are walking into. These details come from PSI’s official HiSET Exam at a Glance sheet and the test taker FAQ.
| Feature | HiSET Mathematics |
|---|---|
| Questions | 55 multiple-choice (some may be unscored) |
| Time | 90 minutes, about 98 seconds per question |
| Algebraic concepts | 45% |
| Numbers and operations on numbers | 19% |
| Measurement and geometry | 18% |
| Data analysis, probability and statistics | 18% |
| Calculator | Calculator neutral; the test center provides a four-function or scientific calculator if you ask, and you cannot bring your own |
| Formulas | A formula sheet is provided for some questions |
“Calculator neutral” means every question can be solved without one, but you are allowed to use the calculator the center gives you. Some states name a specific type or model, so check your state’s policy. PSI’s guidance also says you should know some formulas by heart, including distance equals rate times time, the Pythagorean theorem and the quadratic formula. For a side-by-side look at how this format compares with the GED, see HiSET math vs GED math.
Retakes and waiting periods
The 2026 Test Taker Bulletin says your subtest fee includes two free retests within 12 months of the date you first purchased that subtest. After an unsuccessful attempt you must wait at least 24 hours before scheduling the retake. A few details from the official FAQ are easy to miss:
- Canceling an appointment does not use up one of your retakes, but rescheduling counts toward your allowed attempts for the year.
- You retake only the subtest you need. Your other passing scores stay on your record.
- For Writing, the multiple-choice score and the essay score must come from the same test date. You cannot pair an essay from one day with multiple-choice results from another.
Your state can add its own retest limits or waiting periods, so read the retest section of your state’s requirements page before you book.
How to read your HiSET score report
Scores appear in your HiSET account after a quality check. HiSET says multiple-choice subtests usually post within about three business days and Writing within about five; paper tests can take longer. You will see two kinds of reports:
- Comprehensive Score Report: you have only one. It shows your highest scaled score on each subtest and whether you have passed the HiSET exam, and it updates after each new or improved attempt. Use it to check the 45-point total.
- Individual Test Report: you get one for every subtest attempt. It gives more detail about that attempt and shows your readiness in that content area. Use it to decide what to study before a retake.
When you look at a math report, ask two questions. First, is the score 8 or higher? Second, how many points does your total still need? A 7 in math with a total of 48 means math is the only problem. An 8 in math with a total of 42 means you can choose which subtest is easiest to raise by three points.
What this means for you: a plan to reach 8 in math
HiSET does not publish a table that converts the number of correct answers on the live test to a scaled score, and scaled scores adjust for differences between test forms. So instead of chasing a fixed number of correct answers, use the official readiness guide for the free practice tests. HiSET’s practice test results guide says that on the free math practice test released in 2024, 13 or more correct answers is “well prepared,” 10 to 12 is “prepared,” 8 to 9 is “somewhat prepared,” and 7 or fewer is “not yet prepared.” Aim for the well prepared range before you book.
Next, use the content weights to decide where your hours go. On a 55-question test, 45% algebra is roughly 25 questions, and each of the other three areas is roughly 10. Algebra deserves the most time, but the number and data questions are often the quickest points to recover.
- Week 1, baseline and number skills. Take a timed practice set, such as our HiSET math practice test PDF with answers, and sort every miss by topic. Then review fractions, decimals, percents, ratios and order of operations.
- Week 2, linear algebra. One-step and multi-step equations, inequalities, slope, and writing an equation from a word problem. This block covers a large share of the 45%.
- Week 3, the rest of algebra and geometry. Systems of equations, functions, factoring and the quadratic formula, then area, perimeter, volume and the Pythagorean theorem. Practice finding each formula on the formula sheet quickly.
- Week 4, data and timing. Mean, median, probability, and reading tables and graphs. Finish with a full 55-question practice test in 90 minutes, without the clock running out on unanswered questions.
If you already have a score report, swap the order and start with your weakest area on the Individual Test Report. For more test-day strategy, read how to pass the HiSET math test, and use the lessons, quizzes and full practice tests in our HiSET math center to fill the gaps you find.
One last tip about the total: if math is your hardest subject, it only needs to reach 8. Points above 8 on Reading, Science or Social Studies count toward the 45 just as much as math points do, so plan your study time across all five subtests, not just the one that worries you most.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 8 a passing score on the HiSET?
Yes, 8 out of 20 is the minimum passing score on each HiSET subtest. But you also need at least 2 out of 6 on the Writing essay and a combined total of at least 45 across all five subtests. If you score exactly 8 on every subtest, your total is 40, so you would still need to raise at least one score.
How many questions can you miss on the HiSET math test?
There is no fixed number. HiSET reports a scaled score from 1 to 20 that adjusts for differences between test forms, and it does not publish a raw-to-scaled conversion for the live test. A practical target is the well prepared range on the official free practice test, which is 13 or more correct on the 2024 math practice test.
Can I retake just the HiSET math subtest?
Yes. You only retake the subtest you need, and your other scores stay on your record. Your fee includes two free retests within 12 months of buying the subtest, and you must wait at least 24 hours after an unsuccessful attempt. Your state may add its own retest rules.
What is a college and career ready score on the HiSET?
HiSET uses 15 out of 20 on a subtest as its college and career readiness benchmark, plus at least 4 out of 6 on the essay for the Writing subtest. It is not required to earn your high school equivalency credential, but it signals you are better prepared for college-level work in that area.
How long does it take to get HiSET scores?
HiSET says multiple-choice subtest scores usually post in your online account within about three business days, and Language Arts Writing within about five business days because the essay is scored by people. Paper-based tests can take longer, depending on when the test center sends in answer sheets.
Can I use a calculator on the HiSET math test?
Yes, but you cannot bring your own. The math test is calculator neutral, and the test center provides a four-function or scientific calculator if you ask for one. Some states specify which calculator is used, so check your state's HiSET requirements page before test day.
