Modify a cooling device to meet a stated goal

Evaluate a cooling-device revision in New York Grade 6 science, compare temperature and time criteria, and find middle-school references, lessons, and quizzes.

The current NYSED science page links the New York State P-12 Science Learning Standards. These state standards include expectations and supporting information that differ from the original NGSS. This page’s selected reference was checked in the actual New York document, including its clarifications, boundaries, practices, core ideas, and crosscutting concepts. The selected New York middle-school expectation uses a Grades 6–8 band. The activity here is a suggested study focus; consult the school’s plan for its local grade placement.

The official introduction (PDF) explains that the state defines performance expectations while districts and teachers make instructional and sequencing decisions. Middle-school expectations are organized by topic for a Grades 6–8 band, rather than assigned to each of those grades separately. Read the complete state document alongside the school’s science course. This original activity is a focused starting point, not a complete curriculum crosswalk.

Modify a cooling device to meet a stated goal

An invented design project uses a teacher-approved sealed cooling pack whose internal dissolving process absorbs thermal energy. Two versions use the same contents and amounts; version B adds an outer insulating layer to slow energy transfer from the warmer room. The goal is a pack surface at or below 18°C at the two-, four-, and six-minute checks. Both start at 22°C. Compare the supplied temperature record, choose a revision to investigate, and explain why the coolest single reading is not enough.

Explain the evidence or model

Both packs reach 16°C at two minutes, so their lowest supplied reading alone does not distinguish them. At four minutes, A is 19°C and B is 17°C; at six minutes, A is 21°C and B is 18°C. B meets the stated threshold at all three checks, while A meets it only at two minutes. The dissolving process absorbs thermal energy; the outer layer can slow energy transfer from the warmer surroundings as the cooled pack warms again. Testing this explanation requires repeated comparisons with matched contents, starting conditions, placement, and measurement methods. The goal concerns temperature over time, not an unmeasured total amount of energy. The design could be modified further, but the record does not prove B is the best possible pack.

What to check in the explanation

These records are invented for design reasoning, not instructions to prepare a chemical mixture. Use only an adult’s approved sealed classroom equipment. Insulation does not produce cold or eliminate transfer; it changes transfer conditions. The New York reference includes chemical and/or physical processes, with criteria such as amounts, time, and observed temperature. This partial record-and-revision task does not replace constructing and testing an actual approved device.

Plan the next activity

  1. State the threshold and all required check times.
  2. Compare each version against every check.
  3. Choose one revision and plan repeated matched tests.

Change one teacher-approved design feature while keeping the same contents and test times. Predict its effect before collecting results. Explain how a different goal, reaching a target sooner rather than staying below it longer, might change the evaluation.

New York Grade 6 Science: useful planning questions

How does Grade 6 connect to New York’s science assessment?

Grade 6 is outside the general statewide science assessment grades on the current schedule. The official 2026–2027 NYSED schedule lists Grades 5 and 8 science within April 5–May 14, 2027. A school administers a grade’s general science assessment on the same day for that grade; schools can select different dates within the window. Confirm the learner’s assigned pathway, accommodations, and current school directions. Science learning continues in other grades. Independently published practice has its own coverage, directions, and scoring and does not predict a state performance level. Read the official guidance.

Why not choose a design from its lowest temperature alone?

A design must meet the stated criterion. Here the target includes several times, so two equal low readings do not establish equal later performance.

Where should I check the complete science requirements?

Read the current NYSED science page, the full New York State P-12 Science Learning Standards, and the official introduction. The selected MS expectation is part of the Grades 6–8 band; confirm its grade placement with the school. This selected activity is not a complete alignment map. Read the official guidance.
