Design a fair comparison of soil and water warming
Read an original warming comparison, separate temperature from energy, and plan a fair investigation using Georgia’s Grade 6 Earth Science expectations.
Georgia’s current science framework identifies Grade 6 as Earth Science. Start with the GaDOE science directory and its adopted Science Georgia Standards of Excellence framework. This activity addresses selected course expectations rather than the entire curriculum.
What changes when two materials receive sunlight?
A fictional classroom investigation puts soil and water in separate containers under the same sunlight. Both begin at 20°C. The table gives invented temperatures, not measurements from a Georgia weather station. Compare the patterns and identify what the procedure must keep consistent before treating a difference as useful evidence.
| Elapsed time | Soil | Water |
|---|---|---|
| Start | 20°C | 20°C |
| 5 minutes | 28°C | 22°C |
| 10 minutes | 34°C | 24°C |
Follow the reasoning
The soil temperature rises more over the listed interval: it reaches 34°C while the water reaches 24°C. In this model, the soil warms faster during the observed ten minutes. That conclusion concerns these samples and conditions. It does not establish a universal warming rate for all land or water. Temperature readings alone also do not measure the total energy absorbed by each sample. Amount of material, its properties, and energy lost to the surroundings matter to that question.
Check the explanation
Sunlight reaches the samples through radiation. Energy can then transfer through contact within a material by conduction, while moving water or air can transfer energy by convection. Those descriptions explain possible processes; the table does not isolate how much energy each process transfers. A warmer final reading is not proof that one sample received more sunlight. Unequal exposure, different starting temperatures, or inconsistent thermometer placement could produce a misleading comparison.
Plan the next activity
- State the investigation question before choosing materials: how do the measured temperatures change under comparable sunlight?
- Use a teacher-managed setup with consistent containers, exposed areas, starting temperatures, observation times, and thermometer placement. Record sample amounts and any unavoidable differences.
- Repeat the comparison and record actual observations, including changes in sunlight or wind, before explaining the pattern.
Extend the plan with a cooling interval in the shade. Predict a pattern, then keep the new observations separate from the invented results. If the two materials cool at different rates, describe the evidence without assuming the warming and cooling differences must be identical. Add an air-temperature observation only after specifying where and how it will be measured. A complete study of this expectation includes air, land, water, and the three heat-transfer processes; this two-sample example starts that work rather than completing it.

How does Grade 6 connect to Georgia science testing?
Grade 6 is outside the Georgia Milestones grade-level science EOG range, which lists Grades 5 and 8. Check the current assessment overview and the school’s course assignments, including any applicable end-of-course assessment. The lessons, practice sets, and books here are independently published resources, not official tests or a certified match to the state assessment. Read the official guidance.
Does a larger temperature rise prove that a sample absorbed more total energy?
No. Temperature is one observation. A total-energy comparison also depends on the amount and properties of the materials and energy transfers to their surroundings.
