Times Tables Race — Multiplication Racing Game
Times Tables Race is a free multiplication racing game: every correct times-table answer moves your car one space closer to the checkered flag, and you race three computer drivers (and, if you like, a ghost of your own best run). Choose any tables from 2 to 12, practice multiplication, division or both, and watch a 12-row fact heatmap show which facts are already fast and which still need work. No account is needed.
How to play
- Pick your times tables, facts, rivals and race length, then press Start your engines!
- Watch the three red lights. When they turn green, the race begins and the first fact appears.
- Answer each fact. A correct answer moves your car forward one space; a wrong answer makes your engine sputter, shows the correct fact, and gives no distance.
- Get 5 correct answers in a row to fire NITRO, which moves you one extra space. Nitro fires again at 10, 15 and so on, and a wrong answer resets the streak.
- The race ends when your car reaches the flag. Your place sets your stars: 1st place earns 3 stars, 2nd earns 2, and 3rd earns 1.
The results screen shows your place, time, accuracy, answers per minute, best streak and number of nitros, plus a podium and a list of the facts you missed with their answers.
Settings
- Times tables: tap any tables from 2s to 12s, or All. Each table is practiced from ×1 to ×12.
- Facts: Multiply (for example 7 × 8), Divide (56 ÷ 7) or Mixed.
- Rivals: Rookie, Pro or Champion. Each level makes the three computer cars faster; Champion rivals cover the track at well over 30 answers per minute.
- Race length: Sprint (20 spaces) or Grand Prix (40 spaces).
- Answer with: four answer buttons (or keys 1–4), or a keypad where you type the answer. Typed correct answers count as soon as they are complete; press Enter to submit anything else.
- Ghost: turn on Race my best to add a faded car that replays your fastest finish for the same race length and fact type. It appears after your first finished race.
- Your car: choose a paint color. Some colors unlock after 1, 3, 5 and 10 race wins.
Your best time for each race length and fact type is saved on your device, along with your driver rank, which is based on your best answers-per-minute: Learner Driver, Kart Kid (12+), Rally Racer (20+), Formula Pro (28+) and Speed Legend (36+).
The fact heatmap
Below the track is a grid of every fact from 2 × 1 to 12 × 12. Each square changes color as you answer that fact:
- Gray: not tried yet.
- Red (needs work): right less than 70% of the time, or usually slower than 5 seconds.
- Yellow (getting there): right less than 90% of the time, or usually slower than 3 seconds.
- Green (fast & right): right at least 90% of the time and usually answered within 3 seconds.
A division fact counts toward its matching multiplication fact, so 56 ÷ 7 updates the 7 × 8 square. Tables you have not selected are dimmed. The game also uses the heatmap to choose questions: facts you have missed, answered slowly or not tried yet come up more often, so practice goes where it is needed. The heatmap is saved in your browser, so it keeps growing across races.
Tips to get faster
- Accuracy beats panic. A wrong answer costs time and resets your nitro streak, so a steady correct answer is usually faster than a quick guess.
- Start narrow. Race just one or two tables until their squares turn green, then add the next table.
- Use known facts. If 6 × 8 is slow, think 5 × 8 = 40, plus one more 8 makes 48.
- Turn division around. For 63 ÷ 9, ask “9 times what is 63?”
- Race your ghost. Beating your own best time is a fair challenge on any day.
- Try the keypad. Typing the answer is harder than choosing from four, and it builds true recall.
What it teaches
Times Tables Race builds multiplication and division fact fluency: recalling facts up to 12 × 12 quickly and accurately instead of counting them out. Fluent facts free up working memory for multi-digit multiplication, long division, fractions, ratios and algebra. The adaptive questions and heatmap make practice targeted, and the race format gives a reason to come back for short, regular sessions, which is how fact recall grows best.
FAQ
Is it free? Yes. It runs in the browser on computers, tablets and phones with no sign-up.
Do the computer cars react to me? No. Each rival drives at a steady pace for the chosen level, with small speed changes, so you can measure your own improvement.
Where is my progress saved? In your browser on this device. Clearing browser data or switching devices starts fresh.
What age is it for? It suits students learning their times tables (usually grades 2–5) and older students who want to speed up their facts before tests.
