Number to Words Converter
To write a number to words, split the digits into groups of three from the right, read each group as a number from 1 to 999, and add its period name. For example, 2,045,312 is 2 | 045 | 312, which reads “two million forty-five thousand three hundred twelve”. On a check, $1,234.56 is “One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100 dollars”.
Show steps
- Group the whole-number digits in threes from the right (periods): 2 | 045 | 312.
- Read each group as a number from 1 to 999 and add its period name: two million + forty-five thousand + three hundred twelve. Groups of 000 are skipped.
- Hyphenate numbers from 21 to 99 (forty-five). US style uses no “and” in whole numbers; “and” is saved for the decimal point.
- Read the decimal as a fraction: 75 is 75 over 100, so say “seventy-five hundredths”. Join it to the whole number with “and”.
- Result: Two million forty-five thousand three hundred twelve and seventy-five hundredths.
Place value of each digit
| Place | Digit | Value |
|---|---|---|
| millions | 2 | 2,000,000 |
| hundred thousands | 0 | 0 |
| ten thousands | 4 | 40,000 |
| thousands | 5 | 5,000 |
| hundreds | 3 | 300 |
| tens | 1 | 10 |
| ones | 2 | 2 |
How to use the number to words converter
- Choose a tab: Number to words for any whole number or decimal, Check amount for dollars and cents, Ordinal for words like twenty-first, or Words to number to go back to digits.
- Type the number. Commas and spaces are ignored, negative numbers and scientific notation (such as 4.5e9) work, and whole numbers can have up to 66 digits.
- Pick the style: US or UK “and”, the short scale (million, billion) or the Indian system (lakh, crore), decimals as a fraction or with “point”, and the letter case.
- Copy the result, or open Show steps and the place value table to see how it was built.
How to write numbers in words, step by step
- Group the digits in threes from the right. Each group is called a period: ones, thousands, millions, billions and so on. 7,080,015 becomes 7 | 080 | 015.
- Read each group as a number from 1 to 999. 7 is seven, 080 is eighty, 015 is fifteen.
- Add the period name after each group, except the last group: seven million, eighty thousand, fifteen.
- Skip groups that are 000. 5,000,200 is “five million two hundred”, with no “thousand”.
- Put it together: 7,080,015 = seven million eighty thousand fifteen.
Hyphenate the numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine (forty-five, ninety-nine), and only those. “One hundred” and “two thousand” take no hyphen.
Place value and period names
Each period is 1,000 times the one before it. This is the short scale used in the United States and in modern British English.
| Name | Value | Zeros |
|---|---|---|
| Thousand | 1,000 = 103 | 3 |
| Million | 1,000,000 = 106 | 6 |
| Billion | 109 | 9 |
| Trillion | 1012 | 12 |
| Quadrillion | 1015 | 15 |
| Quintillion | 1018 | 18 |
| Sextillion | 1021 | 21 |
| Septillion | 1024 | 24 |
| Octillion | 1027 | 27 |
| Nonillion | 1030 | 30 |
| Decillion | 1033 | 33 |
The names continue (undecillion, duodecillion, …) up to vigintillion, 1063, which this converter supports. Within a period, each digit has its own place value. In 345, the 3 is worth 300, the 4 is worth 40 and the 5 is worth 5. For very large or very small numbers, the scientific notation converter is often easier to read than words.
When to use “and”: US and UK style
In US style, “and” is not used inside whole numbers: 105 is “one hundred five” and 2,350 is “two thousand three hundred fifty”. In math class, “and” marks the decimal point, so 105.5 is “one hundred five and five tenths”.
In UK style, “and” goes after “hundred” and before a final number under 100: “one hundred and five”, “one thousand and five”. Both are correct; choose the one your teacher, school or style guide uses.
Decimals in words
There are two ways to read the digits after the decimal point:
- As a fraction. Read the digits as a whole number and name the last place: 0.75 is “seventy-five hundredths”, 3.125 is “three and one hundred twenty-five thousandths”, and 7.0089 is “seven and eighty-nine ten-thousandths”. The last digit’s place (tenths, hundredths, thousandths) is the denominator.
- With “point”. Say each digit on its own: 3.125 is “three point one two five”. This is the everyday way to read long decimals and is common in science.
Rounding first can make a long decimal easier to say; the rounding calculator shows each step.
How to write a check amount in words
Write the dollars in words, then “and”, then the cents as a fraction of 100. $1,234.56 becomes “One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100 dollars”, and $85.00 becomes “Eighty-five and 00/100 dollars”. Start at the far left of the line and draw a line through any empty space after the words so nothing can be added. The amount in words should match the number in the box exactly.
Ordinal numbers in words
To write an ordinal, write the counting number and change only the last word. Most words add -th (four → fourth, hundred → hundredth). The irregular ones are first, second, third, fifth, eighth, ninth and twelfth, and tens ending in -y change to -ieth (twenty → twentieth). So 21 is twenty-first, 112 is one hundred twelfth, and 1,000,000 is one millionth. The short forms use -st, -nd and -rd for numbers ending in 1, 2 and 3, except 11th, 12th and 13th.
Indian numbering: lakh and crore
The Indian system groups the last three digits, then every two digits: 1,00,000 is one lakh (100,000) and 1,00,00,000 is one crore (10,000,000). So 12,34,567 is “twelve lakh thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven”, the same number as 1,234,567 (one million two hundred thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven). Larger amounts are usually said in crores, such as “one lakh crore” for 1012.
Common spelling mistakes
- Fourty. It is forty, even though four and fourteen keep the u.
- Ninty. It is ninety; ninth drops the e.
- Plural periods. Write “two million”, not “two millions”, when a number comes before it.
- Extra hyphens. “One-hundred” and “two-thousand” do not need hyphens when written as numbers.

Group the digits: 3 | 040 | 006. That is three million, forty thousand, six.
Forty drops the u, and numbers from 21 to 99 are hyphenated: forty-four.
The last digit is in the hundredths place, so 0.37 is thirty-seven hundredths.
In US style, “and” marks the decimal point, so the number is 600.2. Without a decimal, 602 would be “six hundred two”.
Dollars in words (five hundred seven), then “and”, then the cents over 100 with two digits: 09/100.
Only the last word changes: two becomes second, so 52 is fifty-second (52nd).
Numbers ending in 11, 12 or 13 always take -th, so 113 is 113th (one hundred thirteenth).
One billion = 1,000,000,000 = 10⁹. A million has 6 zeros and a trillion has 12.
One lakh is 1,00,000 (100,000), so 25,00,000 = 2,500,000 is twenty-five lakh.
UK style adds “and” before a final number under 100: one thousand and nine. US style writes one thousand nine.
