How Roman numerals work
Roman numerals use the symbols I, V, X, L, C, D and M. Values are added left to right, except for six subtractive pairs — IV (4), IX (9), XL (40), XC (90), CD (400) and CM (900) — where a smaller symbol before a larger one means subtract.
Frequently asked questions
How do you write 2024 in Roman numerals?
2024 = MMXXIV: MM is 2000, XX is 20, and IV is 4.
Why is the range only 1 to 3999?
Standard Roman numerals have no zero and no symbol above M, so the largest value written with ordinary letters is 3999 (MMMCMXCIX).
What are subtractive pairs?
Combinations like IV, IX, XL, XC, CD and CM, where a smaller numeral placed before a larger one is subtracted from it.
