ACT Score Calculator
Your enhanced ACT Composite is the average of your English, Math and Reading scores, rounded to the nearest whole number. For example, (24 + 27 + 25) ÷ 3 = 25.33, which rounds to 25, and ACT’s 2026-27 national ranks put a 25 at 83. This ACT score calculator also converts raw scores with ACT’s official practice-test tables, adds STEM, superscores and matches an SAT score.
US ranks for each score
| Score | Value | US rank |
|---|---|---|
| English | 24 | 81 |
| Math | 27 | 91 |
| Reading | 25 | 78 |
| Science | 23 | 77 |
| Composite | 25 | 83 |
| STEM | 25 | 85 |
Show steps
- Add English, Math and Reading: 24 + 27 + 25 = 76.
- Divide by 3: 76 ÷ 3 = 25.33.
- Round to the nearest whole number (ACT rounds fractions of one-half or more up, and lower fractions down): 25. Science is not part of the enhanced Composite.
- STEM = average of Math and Science: (27 + 23) ÷ 2 = 25 = 25.
- Next Composite: 26 needs an average of at least 25.5, so a section total of 77 or more. You have 76, so you need 1 more point across English, Math and Reading.
- In the 2018 ACT/SAT concordance, a 25 corresponds to an SAT total of about 1210.
How to use the ACT score calculator
- Composite: type your English, Math and Reading scores (1 to 36). Add Science if you took it to get your STEM score too.
- Raw scores: after one of ACT’s free online practice tests, choose Practice Test 1 or 2 and type how many scored questions you got right in each section. The tool uses ACT’s own conversion table for that test.
- Superscore: type the section scores from two or three test dates. The tool takes your best English, Math and Reading and averages them.
- Read the US rank, the SAT match and the “points to the next Composite” chip, then open Show steps for the full working.
The enhanced ACT at a glance
ACT launched a shorter, enhanced test for online National testing in April 2025 and on paper in September 2025. Since September 2025 every ACT test uses the enhanced Composite, built from English, Math and Reading only. Science is still offered and still scored, but it no longer counts in the Composite.
| Section | Questions | Time | Scored questions on ACT’s practice keys | In the Composite? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| English | 50 | 35 minutes | 40 | Yes |
| Math | 45 | 50 minutes | 41 | Yes |
| Reading | 36 | 40 minutes | 27 | Yes |
| Science (optional) | 40 | 40 minutes | 34 | No, it feeds STEM |
Each section includes field-test questions that do not count. On ACT’s practice-test answer keys they are grayed out, which is why the highest raw scores are 40, 41, 27 and 34. Wrong answers are not subtracted, so answer every question.
How the ACT Composite score is calculated
Each section gets a scale score from 1 to 36. Then:
- Composite = (English + Math + Reading) ÷ 3, rounded to the nearest whole number. ACT’s rule: fractions less than one-half are rounded down, and fractions of one-half or more are rounded up. With three sections the average always ends in .00, .33 or .67, so .33 rounds down and .67 rounds up.
- STEM = the average of Math and Science, reported when you take Science.
- ELA = a combination of English, Reading and Writing, reported when you take the optional Writing test.
A useful shortcut: to reach a Composite of C + 1 you need an average of at least C + 0.5, so your three section scores must add up to at least 3C + 2. With a 25 Composite you need a section total of 77; the calculator shows how many points you are away.
Official ACT raw score conversion
ACT publishes a raw-to-scale table with each released practice test, and the tables differ slightly from form to form. The calculator holds the full tables for ACT’s Online Practice Tests 1 and 2. Fewest scored questions right for selected scale scores:
| Scale score | English (of 40) | Math (of 41) | Reading (of 27) | Science (of 34) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 36 | 40 / 40 | 40 / 40 | 27 / 27 | 34 / 34 |
| 30 | 36 / 35 | 33 / 35 | 23 / 23 | 28 / 30 |
| 25 | 31 / 31 | 26 / 28 | 20 / 20 | 22 / 25 |
| 20 | 24 / 23 | 21 / 23 | 15 / 15 | 16 / 17 |
Each cell shows Practice Test 1 / Practice Test 2. Math on Test 2 needed more correct answers for the same score, which is exactly the form-to-form difference that equating handles. Treat a raw-score result as a close guide to test-day performance, not a promise.
ACT national ranks and SAT equivalents
Your US rank is the percent of recent ACT-tested high school graduates who scored the same as you or lower. ACT’s current ranks use the classes of 2024 to 2026 and apply to tests taken from September 2026 to August 2027. The national mean Composite in that group is 19.1.
| Composite | US rank | SAT total match |
|---|---|---|
| 36 | 100 | 1590 |
| 33 | 98 | 1460 |
| 30 | 94 | 1370 |
| 28 | 91 | 1310 |
| 25 | 83 | 1210 |
| 22 | 72 | 1110 |
| 20 | 63 | 1040 |
| 18 | 52 | 970 |
| 16 | 41 | 890 |
| 14 | 28 | 800 |
The SAT column comes from the 2018 ACT/SAT concordance, which ACT says is the latest version and is not updated every year. ACT reports that the new three-section Composite has score distributions consistent with the old four-section one. To start from an SAT score, use the SAT score calculator.
ACT score examples
Example 1: Composite and STEM
Jordan scores English 24, Math 27, Reading 25 and Science 23. The Composite is (24 + 27 + 25) ÷ 3 = 76 ÷ 3 ≈ 25.33, which rounds down to 25 (US rank 83). STEM is (27 + 23) ÷ 2 = 25. To reach a 26, Jordan needs a section total of 77, one more point.
Example 2: raw scores from a practice test
Priya gets 31 English, 30 Math and 20 Reading questions right. On Practice Test 1 those convert to 25, 28 and 25, so the Composite is 78 ÷ 3 = 26. The same raw scores on Practice Test 2 convert to 25, 26 and 25, for 76 ÷ 3 ≈ 25.33, a Composite of 25. One Math point decides it, which is why real forms are equated.
Example 3: superscore
Sam’s first test: English 24, Math 27, Reading 23 (Composite 25). Second test: 27, 25, 26 (Composite 26). The superscore uses English 27, Math 27 and Reading 26: 80 ÷ 3 ≈ 26.67, which rounds up to 27, one point above Sam’s best single test.
Common ACT scoring mistakes
- Averaging four sections. Since 2025 Science is not in the Composite. A four-section average is the legacy method.
- Counting field-test questions. On practice keys, skip the grayed-out questions before converting.
- Using a conversion table from another test. Each form has its own table; use the one that matches your practice test.
- Rounding .5 down. ACT rounds one-half up. It matters for STEM, where two scores are averaged.
- Treating the US rank as a percent correct. A rank of 83 compares you with other test takers; it says nothing about how many questions you answered.
Moving your ACT Math score

Since September 2025 the Composite uses English, Math and Reading only. Science is reported separately.
STEM is the average of Math and Science: (27 + 24) ÷ 2 = 25.5, and one-half rounds up to 26.
A 26 needs an average of at least 25.5, so the total must be at least 3 × 25.5 = 76.5, which means 77.
Each section contains field-test questions that do not count; on the answer key they are grayed out.
Best of each: English 28, Math 30, Reading 27. (28 + 30 + 27) ÷ 3 = 85 ÷ 3 ≈ 28.33, which rounds to 28.
The US rank is the percent of recent ACT-tested high school graduates who scored the same or lower.
Science is not part of the enhanced Composite: (20 + 19 + 21) ÷ 3 = 20. Averaging all four sections (22.5, giving 23) is the legacy method.

Frequently asked questions
How is the ACT Composite score calculated now?
On the enhanced ACT, add your English, Math and Reading scores, divide by 3 and round to the nearest whole number, with one-half rounding up. Science is no longer part of the Composite; it is reported separately and combined with Math into a STEM score.
Is ACT Science still required?
No. On the enhanced ACT, Science is optional and you can choose not to take it. If you skip it you get no Science or STEM score, but your Composite is unaffected. Some colleges and STEM programs may still want a Science score, so check their requirements.
Can I use one raw score chart for every ACT?
No. ACT equates each test form, so the same number of correct answers can give slightly different scale scores on different tests. Use the table that belongs to your practice test; the calculator includes ACT's official tables for Online Practice Tests 1 and 2.
What ACT score equals a 1200 on the SAT?
In the 2018 ACT/SAT concordance, SAT totals from 1200 to 1220 match an ACT Composite of 25. A 25 corresponds to an SAT total of about 1210.
How does the ACT superscore work?
ACT averages your best English, Math and Reading scores from any of your test dates, including legacy and enhanced tests, and rounds the result. Colleges choose whether to use it.
