Free Grade 6 English Worksheets for Oklahoma Students

The first writing assignment of sixth grade, in a middle school outside Tulsa, is one prompt on the board: *Tell me about one book you read this summer.* The teacher gives the class fifteen minutes. Twenty-seven kids hunch over notebook paper. Some write half a page. Some write three lines and stop. Two write the same sentence in different ways for the whole period. One writes nothing at all, then at the very end scrawls *I didn’t read anything.*

That moment, fifteen minutes long, is the most honest reading inventory a Grade 6 teacher gets all year. It tells her, before any data system or pretest result, which kids spent the summer with words and which kids did not. By Friday, she knows what the gap looks like. By Halloween, she knows whether the gap is closing. By April, the OSTP will tell the rest of the state what she already learned in those fifteen minutes.

The forty-six PDFs below are the kind of practice that lets a sixth grader who wrote three lines in September write half a page in November and a full page by spring. Each one targets a single Grade 6 ELA standard from the Oklahoma Academic Standards for ELA. Each one prints clean on any home printer, opens with a Quick Review, and ends with an answer key written for a parent or a student to read aloud together.

What’s on this page

The worksheets are grouped the way Oklahoma’s ELA framework groups its expectations — reading, writing, language, and vocabulary all sitting beside each other rather than in separate silos. Every PDF is free. No login. No email.

How to use these worksheets at home

Build one habit before any other: read with your sixth grader for fifteen minutes a night, even if the only book in the house is a library hold or a picked-over paperback. Print a reading PDF on Sunday and tuck it into whatever book you are using during the week. After a few chapters, sit down with the worksheet together. The PDF gives the reading a target. The reading gives the PDF context. Neither one works as well alone.

Rotate the strands across a week. A reading-literature PDF on Monday, a vocabulary PDF on Tuesday, a grammar PDF on Wednesday, a reading-informational PDF on Thursday, a language-and-style PDF on Friday. By Sunday afternoon your sixth grader has touched every part of the test, in twenty-minute pieces, without ever sitting down to anything that felt like test prep.

Review the wrong answers, not the right ones. A score of nineteen out of twenty on a worksheet is not where the learning happens. The one missed item is. Turn back to it before the page goes into the recycling bin, and ask, in your own words, what the right answer would sound like said aloud. Sixth graders who learn to read their own wrong answers honestly grow faster than sixth graders who only review totals.

A note about Oklahoma’s OSTP

The Oklahoma School Testing Program assessment in Grade 6 ELA — typically labeled OSTP Reading — is administered each spring and is aligned to the Oklahoma Academic Standards for ELA. One feature of Oklahoma’s program is worth knowing for at-home preparation: at Grade 6, the OSTP focuses on reading comprehension and language conventions and does not include a separate, scored writing section the way some neighboring states do. That does not mean writing is unimportant — strong writers tend to be the strongest readers — but it does mean that the test-day stakes sit on the reading and language strands.

Practically, that means the highest-leverage PDFs on this page are the Reading: Literature, Reading: Informational Text, Grammar, Conventions, and Vocabulary worksheets. Sixth graders should still practice argument, informative, and narrative writing during the year — those skills are explicitly named in the Oklahoma Academic Standards and are taught in class — but the test rewards depth in close reading and command of conventions. Plan home practice with that weighting in mind: roughly two thirds reading and language, one third writing. Every Grade 6 ELA standard in the Oklahoma framework has at least one worksheet on this page.

Want everything in one bundle?

For families who prefer one consolidated resource over forty-six separate PDFs, the Grade 6 ELA Preparation Bundle gathers full-length practice tests and complete answer keys into a single package. It is most useful in the weeks before the spring administration, when a sixth grader benefits from rehearsing the shape of a full OSTP sitting — long reading passages, paired texts, and convention items spread across a single test block.

Oklahoma Grade 6 ELA Preparation Bundle — four practice-test books, 26 unique full-length tests, complete answer keys with explanations.

A short closing

That first-day prompt — *tell me about one book you read this summer* — was never really about summer. It was about whether reading lives in the kid’s regular hours. Print one of these PDFs tonight. Read fifteen minutes alongside your sixth grader. By the spring, the kid who wrote three lines in September is going to be the kid who writes a page.
