Campaign work
Political participation consists of voluntary actions intended to influence government, elections, or public decisions. Conventional participation uses recognized institutional channels: voting, volunteering for a campaign, donating, contacting officials, attending public meetings, joining organizations, signing petitions, or submitting comments. "Conventional" describes the channel, not the effort or importance. Voting is widely accessible but episodic and communicates a choice among options; sustained campaign or organizational work can be more demanding and transmit more detailed information.
Campaign work tries to persuade, identify, register, or mobilize voters on behalf of a candidate or party. Canvassing, phone banking, data entry, event organizing, translation, and volunteer recruitment multiply a campaign's capacity. A private ballot expresses one choice; canvassing attempts to affect other choices.
Voting chooses among formal alternatives; campaign work helps an alternative compete; contacting asks an officeholder to act; public comments supply information or preferences within a proceeding. All are conventional, but they reach different stages and communicate different resources.
