What do Washington 2nd graders learn in math?
In 2nd grade, Washington math centers on adding and subtracting within 100, place value to 1,000, money, telling time to five minutes, and simple data. This page pairs each skill with short lessons, skill quizzes and printable worksheets.
State What a Data Record Shows
Use invented return counts to answer a bounded question and identify missing information, with a selected Washington 2026 Grade 2 reference.
Returns on one afternoon
An invented library tally records returns during one afternoon: six picture books, three story books, four information books, and two poetry books. How many returns were recorded? Which category had the fewest? A student says poetry was the least borrowed category that month. Explain what the tally can actually answer.
| Category | Returns |
|---|---|
| Picture books | 6 |
| Story books | 3 |
| Information books | 4 |
| Poetry books | 2 |
Follow the reasoning
The tally records 6 + 3 + 4 + 2 = 15 returns, and poetry has the fewest recorded returns: two. A supported statement names both the category and the collection period. The tally does not record how many books were borrowed that month, how long they were kept, or how many remained on loan. A return is a different event from a borrowing. Therefore, the claim about the least borrowed category is not established by these afternoon return counts. With teacher guidance, frame the answer around the question “What was returned during this afternoon?”
Check the explanation
These are fictional counts, with each returned book assigned to one category. The record is not a census of monthly borrowing. A book’s category and a reader’s preference are also different kinds of information.
Try the next step
Imagine that three more poetry books are returned later that same afternoon. Update poetry to five and the total to eighteen. Story books now have the fewest recorded returns. Explain why a statement should name the record’s end time before comparing categories.
Washington reference for this worked activity
The Washington mathematics standards directory links the adopted 2026 standards. The PDF records adoption on June 18, 2026. OSPI says educators can explore, learn about, and begin using the new standards during 2026–27, with required use with students in 2027–28. Ask the school which learning sequence it follows during the transition. Read the complete requirements and the school’s current curriculum sequence. The reference below selects one worked focus.
| Selected reference | Activity focus | Complete requirement |
|---|---|---|
| M.2.DA.DS.4 | Communicate a supported answer about collected data | Read the state-linked PDF page 23 |
This selected reference identifies the activity focus. The complete standard and grade curriculum include additional work. These labels do not certify alignment of every independent lesson, worksheet, or quiz in the broader directory.
Choose a next task from the student’s explanation
Use changed values or a different figure to check whether the student can explain the same relationship. If the explanation is unclear, return to the model; if the reasoning is sound but a calculation is wrong, work through a shorter calculation and check it against the model. Use the related learning resources alongside the teacher’s assigned goals.
OSPI’s state-testing overview lists Smarter Balanced mathematics and English in Grades 3–8 and 10. Grade 2 is below that listed mathematics range; follow the school’s classroom assessment guidance. Independently published practice has its own timing, tools, question count, and scoring. This original activity is not an official state assessment question, and a practice result does not establish a state performance level. Read Washington assessment guidance.
State sources and the selected complete PDF page checked October 6, 2026. OSPI separates classroom standards implementation from assessment updates: new media-literacy, digital-citizenship, and data-science assessment changes are planned no earlier than 2028–29, beginning with pilots. This does not establish a changed current test format or question count. Read standards and assessment transition guidance. Confirm later guidance and local assignments.

Grade 2 math: useful planning questions
Can returns show how many books were borrowed in a different period?
Not by themselves. A borrowing record for that period is needed to answer that question.
