What do New Mexico 2nd graders learn in math?
In 2nd grade, New Mexico math centers on adding and subtracting within 100, place value to 1,000, money, telling time to five minutes, and simple data. This page pairs each skill with short lessons, skill quizzes and printable worksheets.

Read both hands before naming the time
A clock face uses the same number labels for hours and groups of five minutes. The hands do different jobs, so their positions must be read together. The original clock example also supplies a part-of-day clue.
Try this original activity
A child checks this clock during an afternoon activity. The long hand points to seven, and the short hand lies between four and five. Name the time to the nearest five minutes and choose a.m. or p.m. Explain why the hour is not five.
Work through the reasoning
Starting from twelve, count seven groups of five minutes: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35. The long hand therefore shows thirty-five minutes after the hour. The short hand has passed four but has not reached five, so the time is 4:35. Because the activity is in the afternoon, write 4:35 p.m. The clock hands alone do not distinguish morning from afternoon; the sentence supplies that information. The hour hand moves gradually during the hour, which is why it does not stay exactly on four until five o’clock. Its between-number position is consistent with thirty-five minutes having elapsed.
Check the common mistake
Reading the long hand as seven minutes confuses hour labels with five-minute groups. Reading the short hand’s nearest number can also give the wrong hour: the hour has not reached five yet. A.m. and p.m. need a context clue or other information. This activity practices time to five minutes, not a requirement to read seconds.
Try a related case
Draw 4:10 p.m.: the minute hand points to two and the hour hand is a little past four. Then describe the same face at 4:10 a.m. Explain what changes in the written label and what does not change on the face.
