Mobility, Opportunity Structures, and Mobility Tables
Social mobility is movement within a stratification system. Vertical mobility changes rank upward or downward. Horizontal mobility moves between positions at roughly the same rank. A job change counts as upward mobility only when the stated rank increases. The researcher must name the dimension used to rank the positions.
Intragenerational mobility follows change within one person’s life or career. Intergenerational mobility compares a person’s position with that of a parent or earlier generation. A promotion from technician to manager is intragenerational. Holding a higher occupational category than one’s parents is intergenerational. One case can be both upward and intergenerational because direction and time frame answer separate questions.
Structural mobility results when the distribution of positions changes. If an expanding health sector creates thousands of professional jobs, many people can move upward even while family origins still affect who reaches the most desirable positions. A contraction can create broad downward movement when an industry disappears.
Exchange mobility is movement within a relatively stable distribution. Some people rise as others move down, so the number of positions at each level changes little. Structural mobility changes the shape of the opportunity structure, while exchange mobility reshuffles people within it. Real mobility can contain both.
A mobility table places origins in rows and destinations in columns. The diagonal records people who remain in the same category. Off-diagonal cells record movement. Whether a cell represents upward or downward mobility depends on how categories are ordered, so a reader should inspect the labels before interpreting direction.

Read each row as 100 people who share an origin. Among children from lower-position families, 55 move away from that origin, including 15 who reach the higher category. Among children from higher-position families, 65 remain there. The table shows movement and a continuing association between origin and destination. It does not prove why the association exists.
Absolute mobility asks how many people occupy a different position from their parents. Relative mobility asks how strongly origins shape the chance of reaching a destination compared with people from other origins. A society can show high absolute upward mobility during occupational expansion while relative advantage remains strong.
Measurement depends on the chosen rank. Income, education, occupational prestige, workplace authority, and relational class location need not move together. A worker can gain pay while losing schedule control, or change occupation while keeping similar prestige. State the dimension before labeling a move.
Mobility evidence should also separate opportunity from outcome. If children from every origin can legally apply to a profession, formal access is open. If entry rates remain sharply unequal, researchers then examine schooling, wealth, networks, discrimination, location, and selection procedures. A table establishes the pattern. A causal claim needs evidence about the pathway.
Quick review: Vertical describes direction, while horizontal describes similar rank. Intragenerational follows one life, while intergenerational compares generations. Structural mobility changes the distribution of positions, while exchange mobility reshuffles people. A mobility table can show movement and origin effects without proving their cause.

Common Misconceptions and a Full Inequality Analysis
The following errors are especially tempting because each begins with a fact and then draws a conclusion that is too broad.
[Misconception 1: High income means high wealth.] Income is a flow. Wealth is a stock of assets minus debts. A household can have high earnings and little net wealth. [Misconception 2: Class is simply an income bracket.] Some studies operationalize class with income categories, but Marxian class concerns relationships to productive property and labor, while Weberian analysis separates class, status, and party. [Misconception 3: Open class systems create equal opportunity.] Legal mobility can coexist with unequal starting resources, closure, discrimination, inheritance, and different probabilities of reaching destinations. [Misconception 4: Poverty is one natural and self-evident condition.] A poverty estimate depends on the resource measure, threshold, household adjustment, place, and time period. [Misconception 5: Functional importance proves that current rewards are necessary.] The Davis-Moore thesis proposes a mechanism. Evidence must still show scarcity, training demands, and whether unequal rewards are the necessary or most effective solution. [Misconception 6: Prestige and power are interchangeable.] Honor can create influence, but prestige is social esteem, whereas power is the capacity to achieve an objective despite resistance. [Misconception 7: Authority is any successful use of force.] Authority is power regarded as legitimate. Coercion can secure compliance without accepted legitimacy. [Misconception 8: Any career change is upward mobility.] A move is vertical only when the stated rank changes. A similar-ranked move is horizontal, even if the job title changes. [Misconception 9: High absolute mobility proves equal relative mobility.] Many people may move because the occupational structure changes while origins continue to predict destinations. [Misconception 10: An individual success disproves structural inequality.] A structure changes probabilities and costs. People who begin in the same category can still reach different outcomes.

For an unfamiliar scenario, complete this sequence:
The valued outcome or risk is 4cm. The relevant resource or rank is 4cm. It should be measured with 4cm, not 4cm. The institution connecting position to outcome is 4cm. The central mechanism is 4cm. The power or mobility classification is 4cm. The evidence supports 4cm, but does not by itself prove 4cm.
A strong answer is specific about the relationship and modest about the conclusion. It names what changes the probability of an outcome without treating a category as a complete description of a person.

Assets and debt, occupational rules, workplace control, institutional power, and family origins shape the opportunities attached to income. Those forces change probabilities rather than dictating a life.
