Middle-Range Theory and Evidence

Robert K. Merton promoted middle-range theories that explain a bounded family of social phenomena. They sit between a single observation and a theory meant to explain society as a whole. Labeling theory, reference-group theory, and theories of social mobility are broad enough to guide many studies but narrow enough to connect with specific evidence.

A major perspective and a middle-range theory do different work. Conflict theory directs attention toward unequal power across many institutions. A middle-range theory might explain how one kind of credential barrier protects an occupation. Symbolic interactionism directs attention toward meaning. Labeling theory makes a narrower claim about how social reactions can alter identity and opportunity. The perspective supplies an orientation. The middle-range theory specifies a mechanism within a limited scope.

Researchers build that bridge with concepts, propositions, and hypotheses. A concept names a feature of social life, such as isolation or relative deprivation. A proposition connects concepts, perhaps claiming that comparison with a higher-status reference group lowers satisfaction. A hypothesis states what observable difference should appear in a defined population if that relationship operates.

Operationalization turns a concept into evidence. A study of isolation might count close contacts, record participation in groups, or ask how often respondents feel lonely. Those measures are related, but they do not capture exactly the same thing. A person can have many contacts and still feel lonely. The theory must identify which part of isolation matters and why it should affect the outcome.

Scope conditions state where the explanation is expected to work. A study of peer influence among ninth graders in one school does not establish a universal law of human conduct. It may support a claim about adolescents under similar organizational and historical conditions. Testing new populations can reveal whether the theory travels or needs a narrower boundary.

A strong theory risks being wrong. Suppose reference-group theory predicts that new employees who compare their pay with senior executives will report lower satisfaction than equally paid employees who compare themselves with other new hires. A careful study confirms the comparison groups but finds no satisfaction difference. That result weakens the stated prediction. Reversed results across several workplaces weaken it further.

Researchers should not rescue every failed prediction by changing the theory after seeing the data. A null result can arise from poor measurement, an omitted condition, weak implementation, or a mistaken mechanism. The next step is to examine those possibilities openly. A claim that treats every result as support cannot be tested because no evidence counts against it.

Review questions about evidence usually ask whether a claim is specific and testable. A useful hypothesis names measurable variables, a population or setting, and an expected direction or difference. Evidence should bear on the proposed mechanism. A finding that people are unequal does not by itself prove conflict theory, and a meaningful gesture does not by itself test every interactionist claim.

Before accepting a hypothesis, check five features. It should name the population or setting, define the variables, predict an expected relationship, state or imply the mechanism, and leave room for disconfirmation. “Students with labels receive fewer opportunities” predicts a measurable difference. “Public labels alter teachers’ expectations, which reduces later opportunities” also names the pathway. The second version guides a better test because researchers can examine both the result and the mechanism.

Quick review: Move from theory to evidence. Name the bounded mechanism, define a measure, state the scope, predict a result, and identify an observation that would weaken the claim.

Theories make sociology more disciplined because they require a researcher to choose a relationship, a level, and evidence that could test the explanation. The cafeteria from the opening can be a system of coordination, a distribution of unequal resources, a field of identity signals, or a gendered arrangement. Each lens asks for different evidence. Before practice, try the whole reasoning routine on one fresh case. Name the outcome. Choose the lens from the proposed mechanism, not the topic. Identify the unit of analysis and the level where the mechanism operates. Then state one observation that would support the claim and one that would weaken it. If you can explain each choice in an ordinary sentence, you are reasoning with theory rather than matching vocabulary.
