Read population change as a social process

You will learn to calculate and interpret basic demographic measures, explain population growth and composition, compare urban and community patterns, apply classic urban models, and connect social inequality with environmental risk and sustainability.

Demography and Population Change

Three processes change a population’s size.

Demography is the systematic study of human populations. Demographers examine size, distribution, and population composition, including age, sex, race or ethnicity, household status, education, and other characteristics. Population size changes through fertility, mortality, and migration.

Fertility refers to actual childbearing in a population. Mortality refers to deaths. Migration is movement that changes a person’s usual residence. A population gains people through births and immigration and loses people through deaths and emigration:

The difference between births and deaths is natural increase. Net migration is immigration minus emigration. A country can have natural decrease yet still grow if positive net migration is large enough.

Rates, Fertility, and Mortality

Counts and rates answer different questions.

The crude birth rate is the number of live births in a year per 1,000 people in the midyear population. The crude death rate uses deaths in the same way:

The rates are called crude because the denominator includes everyone, not only people at risk of giving birth or dying at a particular age. Age-specific rates allow more precise comparison. The total fertility rate estimates the average number of children a woman would have if current age-specific birth rates continued through her reproductive years. Replacement-level fertility is the fertility needed for one generation to replace itself in the long run, assuming no migration; it varies with mortality and is not exactly the same in every population.

The infant mortality rate counts deaths of children under age one per 1,000 live births in a year. Life expectancy estimates the average years a newborn would live if current age-specific mortality rates continued. Neither measure predicts one individual’s fate.

Quick review: Fertility adds births, mortality removes deaths, and migration moves residents across boundaries. Natural increase is births minus deaths. Net migration is immigration minus emigration.

Migration: Direction, Causes, and Consequences

Movement connects places rather than affecting only the destination.

Immigration is movement into a country or other defined area. Emigration is movement out. The same person is an emigrant from the origin and an immigrant to the destination. Internal migration occurs within a country; international migration crosses national borders.

Push factors encourage departure from an origin, such as war, persecution, unemployment, or environmental disaster. Pull factors attract people toward a destination, such as safety, family networks, education, or jobs. Networks can lower the cost and uncertainty of later migration by providing information, housing, and contacts.

Migration can supply labor and cultural connections at destinations while changing housing, schools, and services. Origins may receive remittances but lose workers or specialized skills. These consequences vary by policy, labor market, migrant status, and time. A push-pull list is a starting point, not a complete account of who is able to move.

Population Composition and Dependency

Age structure carries history forward.

A population pyramid is a graph that displays the number or percentage of people by age and usually sex. A broad base often reflects recent high fertility. A narrower base can indicate lower fertility. A bulge can represent a large birth cohort or migration. An older, more rectangular profile commonly appears where fertility and mortality are both low.

A cohort is a group that experiences a demographic event during the same period, such as people born in the same years. Cohorts move through the age structure together, affecting school enrollment, labor supply, housing, and retirement systems.

The dependency ratio compares people commonly treated as dependents, often children and older adults, with the working-age population. It is a population-level planning measure, not a count of who actually works or depends on someone. A high child dependency ratio and a high old-age dependency ratio create different demands.

The Demographic Transition

Birth and death rates tend to change at different points in development.

Demographic transition theory describes a historical shift from high birth and death rates to low birth and death rates. The standard model has four stages:

In Stage 1, birth and death rates are both high, so long-run population growth is slow. In Stage 2, death rates fall while birth rates remain high, producing rapid natural increase. In Stage 3, birth rates decline, so growth slows. In Stage 4, birth and death rates are both low, producing stability or slow growth without migration.

Some accounts add a fifth stage in which fertility remains below replacement and natural decrease may occur. The model summarizes a recurring pattern; it does not claim that every society follows an identical path or timetable. Public health, women’s education and employment, contraception, urban living, child survival, pensions, state policy, and economic security can influence the transitions.

Malthus and Population Debate

A simple growth model opened a lasting argument.

Thomas Malthus argued that population, if unchecked, can grow geometrically while food supply grows only arithmetically. Population would then outrun subsistence, producing checks such as famine, disease, or conflict. Neo-Malthusian arguments extend concern to finite resources and ecological limits.

Critics note that agricultural productivity, technology, trade, and voluntary fertility decline can change the relationship. They also argue that hunger often results from poverty, conflict, and unequal distribution rather than a global shortage of food alone. Malthus’s value for sociology lies partly in the question he posed: how do population, production, distribution, and environment interact?

Urbanization, Suburbanization, and Metropolitan Regions

Population concentration and city growth are related but distinct.

Urbanization is an increase in the proportion of a population living in urban places. Urban growth is an increase in the number of urban residents. A country can experience urban growth without a higher urban share if its rural population grows equally fast.

Industrialization encouraged urbanization by concentrating jobs, transportation, and markets. Cities can support specialization, innovation, and diverse social networks while also concentrating housing shortages, congestion, pollution, and inequality. These outcomes depend on planning and power, not simply density.

Suburbanization is population and investment movement from a central city toward surrounding communities. In the United States, highways, mortgage policy, automobile ownership, job location, and racial exclusion all shaped suburban growth. Counterurbanization is movement from metropolitan areas toward smaller towns or rural places.

A metropolitan area consists of a central urban core and surrounding communities tied to it through commuting and economic interaction. Metropolitan problems cross municipal boundaries: housing, transit, air pollution, and employment rarely stop at a city limit.

Rural communities generally have lower population density and greater distance from large service centers. They are not socially uniform or untouched by global change. Mechanized agriculture, resource extraction, tourism, remote work, aging, and migration can reshape rural life.

Community and Social Relationships

Place and relationship do not always coincide.

A community can mean people connected by place, sustained interaction, or a shared identity. Ferdinand Tonnies contrasted Gemeinschaft, relationships experienced as personal and rooted in tradition, with Gesellschaft, relationships organized more impersonally around formal roles and individual aims. These are ideal types, not labels for perfectly separate kinds of settlements.

Urban residents can maintain close personal networks, and rural relationships can be formal or conflictual. Claude Fischer’s subcultural approach argues that large cities can support specialized networks because enough people share a less common interest or identity. Community is therefore not erased by urban size; its form can change.

Human Ecology and Urban Models

Space reflects competition, coordination, and history.

Human ecology studies how populations and institutions adapt to and organize social and physical environments. Early Chicago School sociologists treated the city as an environment in which groups and activities compete for space, form concentrations, and succeed one another.

Ernest Burgess’s concentric-zone model depicts urban development in rings around a central business district. A transition zone lies near the center, followed by working-class and more affluent residential zones farther out. Homer Hoyt’s sector model proposes wedge-shaped sectors extending along transportation routes. Harris and Ullman’s multiple-nuclei model describes cities with several centers, such as a downtown, industrial district, airport zone, and suburban business center.

The models are simplified. Highways, zoning, topography, government investment, segregation, deindustrialization, and global capital can redirect development. The best model in a question is the one whose spatial pattern matches the stem: rings, wedges, or several centers.

Environmental Sociology and Inequality

Environmental benefits and harms are socially distributed.

Environmental sociology examines relationships among social organization, technology, inequality, and the natural environment. Consumption and production can create benefits in one location while shifting pollution, extraction, or waste to another. Laws, markets, scientific knowledge, and social movements shape which risks become visible and regulated.

Environmental inequality is the unequal distribution of environmental hazards and amenities across social groups. Environmental racism identifies racialized patterns in exposure, protection, and decision-making power. A sociological explanation looks beyond individual choices to zoning, housing discrimination, land prices, political influence, workplace location, and enforcement.

Risk can also be unequal within a disaster. Evacuation requires transportation, money, information, accessible facilities, and safe destinations. The same hurricane or heat wave can therefore produce different outcomes across neighborhoods.

Sustainable Development

Meeting present needs must not erase future options.

Sustainable development means meeting present needs without undermining the ability of future generations to meet theirs. It joins environmental protection with economic and social well-being. A policy that lowers emissions but makes basic energy unaffordable for low-income households has an equity problem; a policy that reduces short-term prices by exhausting a resource has an intergenerational problem.

Sociologists study collective-action problems, unequal responsibility, environmental movements, policy design, and the institutions needed for long-term coordination. Technology matters, but social rules determine who controls it, who pays, and who receives its benefits.

Quick review: Concentric-zone means rings around one center. Sector means wedges along routes. Multiple-nuclei means several activity centers. Environmental inequality concerns patterned exposure and access, while sustainable development joins present well-being with future capacity.
