KG to LBS Converter (and Every Weight Unit)
To convert kg to lbs, divide the kilograms by 0.45359237, because one pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg. That is the same as multiplying by about 2.20462. For example, 70 kg ÷ 0.45359237 = 154.32 lb, which is 154 lb 5.2 oz, or 11 stone 0.3 lb. To go from pounds to kg, multiply by 0.45359237.
1 lb = 0.45359237 kg exactly
Show steps
- Each unit has an exact definition in grams: 1 kg = 1,000 g and 1 lb = 453.59237 g (NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C).
- 1 pound = 0.45359237 kg, so divide by 0.45359237.
- 70 kg ÷ 0.45359237 = 154.323584… lb. Rounded for display: 154.324 lb.
- Pounds and ounces: there are 16 ounces in a pound. The whole part, 154 lb, stays; the decimal part becomes ounces: 0.323584 lb × 16 ≈ 5.17734 oz, so 154 lb 5.2 oz.
- Stones and pounds: there are 14 pounds in a stone, so 154.324 ÷ 14 = 11 st with 0.3 lb left over: 11 st 0.3 lb.
- Check by converting back: 154.324 lb × 0.45359237 ≈ 70.0002 kg.

How to use the weight converter
- Type a number in the From box and pick its unit: milligrams, grams, kilograms, metric tons, ounces, pounds, pounds + ounces, stones, stones + pounds, US short tons or UK long tons.
- Pick the unit you want in the To box. The answer appears as you type, and you can type in the To box to convert the other way.
- For a baby’s birth weight or a body weight, choose Pounds + ounces (7 lb 8 oz) or Stones + pounds (11 st 4 lb). Fractions such as 1/2 work too.
- Choose how many decimals you want, or leave it on Auto.
- Open Show steps for the working, read the dual scale, and use the table for other values of the same pair.
KG to lbs formula
pounds = kilograms ÷ 0.45359237
kilograms = pounds × 0.45359237
The number 0.45359237 is the legal definition of the avoirdupois pound, the pound used for body weight, groceries and shipping. NIST Handbook 44 lists 1 pound as 453.59237 grams (exactly). Because the definition is exact, dividing by it gives the exact number of pounds; the only rounding is in how many decimals you keep.
The familiar factor 2.20462 is 1 ÷ 0.45359237 rounded, so “multiply by 2.20462” is a very close shortcut. Multiplying by 2.2 is quicker but about 0.2% low: 70 × 2.2 = 154 lb, while the exact answer is 154.32 lb.
A mental-math trick for kg to lbs: double the kilograms and add 10% of the result. For 70 kg, 2 × 70 = 140, and 140 + 14 = 154 lb. For lbs to kg, halve the pounds and take off 10%: 150 lb → 75 → 67.5 kg (the exact answer is 68.04 kg).
Pounds and ounces
A pound has 16 ounces, so the decimal part of a pound is not ounces. To split a decimal number of pounds:
- Keep the whole number as the pounds.
- Multiply the decimal part by 16 to get the ounces.
Example: 70 kg. 70 ÷ 0.45359237 = 154.3236 lb. The decimal part is 0.3236, and 0.3236 × 16 = 5.18 oz. So 70 kg is 154 lb 5.2 oz.
Example: a 3.2 kg newborn. 3.2 ÷ 0.45359237 = 7.0548 lb, and 0.0548 × 16 = 0.88 oz, so the baby weighs about 7 lb 0.9 oz.
Going the other way: 7 lb 8 oz. 8 oz is 8 ÷ 16 = 0.5 lb, so the weight is 7.5 lb, and 7.5 × 0.45359237 = 3.402 kg.
One ounce is exactly 1/16 of a pound, which is 28.349523125 grams.
Stones and pounds
In the UK and Ireland, body weight is often given in stones and pounds. One stone is 14 pounds, about 6.35 kg. To convert pounds to stones, divide by 14: the whole number is the stones and the remainder is the pounds.
Example: 70 kg. 154.32 lb ÷ 14 = 11 stones with 0.32 lb left over, so 70 kg is 11 st 0.3 lb.
Going the other way: 11 st 4 lb. 11 × 14 + 4 = 158 lb, and 158 × 0.45359237 = 71.67 kg.

Mass vs weight
In physics, mass is the amount of matter in an object and is measured in kilograms, while weight is the force of gravity on it and is measured in newtons. Your mass is the same on the Moon, but your weight there is much smaller.
In everyday life and in trade, “weight” simply means mass. NIST’s Guide to the SI notes that in commercial and everyday use, weight is usually a synonym for mass, and the kilogram is its unit. A bathroom scale or a shop scale reports mass in kilograms or pounds, and this converter works the same way. The pound here is a unit of mass, not the “pound-force” used in engineering.
Common mistakes when converting weight
- Multiplying when you should divide. A kilogram is heavier than a pound, so the number of pounds must be bigger. 70 kg is 154 lb, not 31.75 lb.
- Reading 154.32 lb as 154 lb 32 oz. The decimal is a fraction of a pound: 0.32 × 16 = 5.1 oz.
- Using 2.2 for precise work. It is 0.2% low, about 1 lb short at 220 kg. Use 0.45359237 for anything that matters.
- Mixing up tons. A US short ton is 2,000 lb, a UK long ton is 2,240 lb, and a metric ton (tonne) is 1,000 kg, about 2,205 lb.
- Confusing ounces. The weight ounce (1/16 lb) is not the fluid ounce, which measures volume, or the troy ounce used for gold.

The pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg. 0.4536 is a rounded value, and 2.20462 is the number of pounds in a kilogram.
Divide by 0.45359237: 50 ÷ 0.45359237 = 110.231…, so 110.23 lb. Multiplying (50 × 0.45359237 = 22.68) converts the wrong way.
Multiply pounds by 0.45359237: 180 × 0.45359237 = 81.646…, about 81.65 kg. Dividing by 2.2 gives the slightly-off 81.82 kg.
The decimal part is a fraction of a pound: 0.25 × 16 = 4 ounces, so 6.25 lb is 6 lb 4 oz.
12 ounces is 12 ÷ 16 = 0.75 of a pound, so the baby weighs 7.75 lb. Writing 7.12 treats ounces as hundredths.
Double 60 to get 120, then add 10% of 120, which is 12: 120 + 12 = 132 lb. The exact answer is 132.28 lb.
A long ton is 2,240 lb (1,016.05 kg), a metric ton is about 2,204.62 lb, 2,100 lb is next, and a short ton is 2,000 lb.
The prefix kilo means one thousand, so 1 kg = 1,000 g. 453.59 g is one pound.
