Tangent Line Calculator (Free, with Graph)
Use this free tangent line calculator to find the equation of the line tangent to a function at a given point. It returns the slope (the derivative at that point), the point of tangency, a graph, and the steps.
How it works
The tangent line at x = a uses the point (a, f(a)) and slope f′(a): y − f(a) = f′(a)(x − a). The calculator finds the slope from the derivative at that point.
How to use it
- Enter a function of x.
- Enter the point a.
- Press Find tangent line.

Frequently asked questions
What is a tangent line?
The straight line that just touches a curve at a point and has the same slope as the curve there.
How is the slope found?
From the derivative of the function evaluated at the chosen point.
Can I use trig or exponential functions?
Yes — sin, cos, tan, exp, ln, log, sqrt, and abs are all supported.
